KCAC IN THE MID-60'

I was too young and unhip to listen to more than maybe two or three times when they were a soul station. Does anybody have remembrances of? I do remember vaguely Hadley (loving you) Madley who also worked at KRIZ at some point I'm pretty sure.

Yes, Hadley (who loves you) Madley was memorable on the Big 1010 - KCAC. IIRC - KCAC was a daytimer....
Lots of soul music - many r & b / soul songs I was hearing for the first time.
I don't know if Johnny Dixon was on there - for sure. I would at times
just switch to 1010 -- close on the dial to:
-- checking out the "old Bat Channel 99" KTKT -- when they were
cranking out day power 10 Kw ... KTKT used to have a fairly clear signal on the old '56 Ford
vacuum tube radio in Tempe in the mid-sixties. ;)

By the late 1960s KCAC was a Spanish station and I think that Elliott Klein was their teenage engineer--in addition to his work at KRIZ.

I remember picking up KIKX (580 or 590) in Tucson and a friend pointing out how good a DJ named Jefferson Kaye was. He became Shadoe Stevens later.

The bat reference made me think of a d.j. named Bat Johnson..KRIZ or KCAC?

If KCAC was Spanish in late 60's when did they go free form ?

KALF in Mesa was actually a soul station for awhile too.

KIKX was 580. KCNA/KTAN/KIKX Tucson...KJMM Tucson...KSAZ Marana.

Shadoe's handle in Tucson was "Jefferson K" (just the initial).

Shadoe's real name is Terry Ingstad. In 1970, while he was with KHJ, he apparently fixed his younger brother, Tim, up with a job at KTKT. Tim used the name Rip Jeffries. A couple years later, Tim ended up PD at KIKX and changed his airname to Jefferson Stone. In early 1974 Tim and their morning guy came up with a phony kidnapping promotion that eventually caused KIKX to lose its license.

Said "morning guy" was Gary "The Crazy Man" Craig, who later surfaced on 1330 KHYT (1978 or so) as "Arthur G", which was probably his real name.
