KCAL Hit By Budget Cuts
Heritage IE rocker, Anaheim Broadcasting's KCAL/Riverside-San Bernardino has been rocked by serious budget cuts:
* longtime morning show members James “Jimbo” Smith and Tiffany Angelo
* morning show producer, Steven Kono
* Michael “Stu-Man” Stewart, a 42-year KCAL vet, who has been doing nights this past year. Was previously also part of the morning show

Sounds like it's the beginning of the end for 90's till now rock format. Ill give it 9 months tops before they flip formats again. And further layoffs like Darryl and the mid day host.

Darryl has been there for years too. Gotta give it to 'em, if this is the beginning of the end, both the station and some of its personalities have had very long runs indeed.

Also, gotta mention that, at least back in the 80's and 90's when I listened to them (due to my home address being in the 909 at the time) they always rocked the hardest. While KLOS and KMET were playing heavy doses of Fleetwood Mac and Huey Lewis (not there is anything wrong with either of them; love 'em both!) KCAL was playing Judas Priest and Dio records.

I'm surprised that a rock station in the IE was able to maintain a full morning show cast and a lineup of local jocks. Even KROQ has cut back over the years.

Few local radio stations, outside the large markets, have a morning show with more than two or three people (hosts and producer). And then there's one midday and one afternoon DJ. And that's it. Few stations outside large markets have live nighttime hosts, going instead with a syndicated show, or something voice tracked. Same for weekends. Maybe a live person or two on weekends (maybe 7am to 1pm and 1pm to 7pm).

I don't think it means a format change. If KCAL-FM switched to something else, the staffing would still be two or three people in the morning, one midday and one afternoon DJ. And maybe a person or two on weekends.

KCAL-FM is a Class A station, running 1,750 watts from a 377 foot tower. It competes with stations that have much bigger coverage areas.

KOLA 29,500 watts - 1700 feet
KGGI 2,550 watts - 1800 feet
KFRG 50,000 watts - 490 feet
KLYY 72,000 watts - 1830 feet

Never heard KCAL here obviously (I'm in the Seattle metro), but I used to monitor their playlist. They played a Seattle area hard-rock band (New American Shame) pretty heavily around 1999-2001 -- a time period which was a heyday for Active Rock. It will be sad if KCAL flips formats. I hate seeing rock stations disappear.
