KCBI sale rumors are real

But not so fast. Criswell College is meeting strong opposition from First Baptist Church of Dallas over the possible sale of KCBI 90.9 to the owners of rival KVTT. A similar situation occurred a couple of years ago, but this time they didn't tell First Baptist. Church leaders say the college has to get their permission for the sale, even if Criswell is the license holder.

Re: KCBI sale rumors are real (No SALE FBC DALLAS Parter)

Hello All,
I think FBC Dallas in right on. People at Criswell College are crazy to sale to KVTT group. I think Criswell College is seeing dollar signs it there minds/heads. FBC Dallas has been without a pastors a long time since Pastor Banrson left to go to a church in FL. FBC Dallas has been without a pastor a long time now but Criswell people thought they put a fast one on FBC Dallas. Criswell College is dead wrong...FBC Dallas has shares/rights in KCBI management too. I know FBC Dallas will winner to keep KCBI with FBC Dallas and Criswell College.

FBC operates hundreds of outreaches, programs and not-for-profit entities. Through the Criswell Institute, KCBI has been one of those. Over the last few years the station has been increasingly employed as a fundraising aparatus rather than a teaching tool or ministry - a focus that has deeply frustrated many of KCBI's employees and many church members and supporters who believed the station was part of the fellowship's faith mandate to preach the Gospel - rather than a revenue producer for other entities. KCBI was self-sustaining, but became tasked with supporting other CBI and FBC enterprises that weren't fairing so well.

As I understand it, the senior pastor of FBC - a once-powerful congregation in serious decline due to demographics, change and isolation - is the chief administrator of FBC's attendant outreaches, and the decision was made several months ago by FBC leaders that no new permanent senior pastor would be named until the church divested itself of many of these, in order to better serve its New Testament focus. As with any church, this kind of decision has brought strong opposition - and not all of the leaders at FBC or CBI support it.

As someone put it to me, they are simply selling what they have in order to better give.

I fail to see any relevant difference in format between the two stations. Since KVTT already has ties to Power-FM, I doubt they would take 90.9 Christian rock.

I'd rather see Criswell College sell to WAY-FM, we might actually get something positioned between KLTY and Power-FM musically that way.

Way FM Media Group does not have the kind of funding it would take to purchase KCBI. EMF (K-Love & Air1) definitely has the financial muscle, but I doubt Criswell would sell to someone who would essentially shut the doors and let go of all of the staff for a network feed. As a reference, EMF recently bought Class A WJKL-FM in suburban Chicago for I believe 17M. A full-market Class C serving what is possibly the single largest market for CCM in the world is definitely worth 23M to EMF.

On the plus side, if this were to happen it would mean the return of Jon Rivers to the market and give KLTY some real competition.

Air1 would be great because we need a christian rock station here with a great signal. I didn't know Air1 was owned by Educational Media until I saw the Air1 website.

Yeah, but if EMF was able to purchase the station it ain't going to be Air1. The demographics just don't work in favor of a such a large purchase price.

You can count on K-Love.

I'm not sure what would happen but I do have a feeling that if a K-Love or Air 1 station were to come to DFW, I don't think it would do well against KLTY or KVRK Power FM.

I live in Lubbock and we have both a k-love and 3 Air 1 stations on 107.3, 94.1, and 99.1

The only advantage K-Love has against KLTY is the fact that it would be commercial-free (when I'm in the DFW area, I get fed up with all the advertising on KLTY), however, they play the same stuff over and over again. I have never been a k-love fan and don't know if it would do well against KLTY.

Air one is more of the same. Air one in a way sounds like k-love at times. They play harder stuff such as a little bit of Skillet or Disciple, but the format is not nearly unique as Power FM's. You will not hear Project 86 or anything like that on Air 1. However, some do prefer a format thats harder than K-Love but not "too hard," so maybe Air 1 might have a chance...a better signal is definitely a plus and is something that Power FM does not have.

Something I do like about K-Love and Air 1 both is the DJs. They seem to care about their listeners a lot. But I don't think they playlist will be able to beat KLTY or KVRK.

That is my opinion. And if K-Love came to Dallas, I wonder what the people at KLUV might think. Two K-loves in Dallas with different formats would be kind of odd.

Power Fm's signal is so lousy is not even funny, we need a christian rock station with a good signal around here.

I'd love to see a frequency swap for Power FM and KCBI. I have no trouble with their signal, I can hear it to Fairview. But not every car radio is a Pioneer Supertuner 3, and most cars now lack decent antennas.
