KCBQ Remembered in Santee

On Mission Gorge Road, at the south end of the Kohl's parking lot .... you'll see the building of the monument dedicated to KCBQ-AM. It'll honor the top 40 years from 1958 to 1978. Names such as Charlie Tuna, Gene Knight, Jack Vincent, Happy Hare, Neil Ross and other pioneers of the medium will have their names engraved on the monument.

Please join us on August 28 at 1170 AM (12:10 p.m.) as the formal dedication will happen. Thank you!! For pictures, please visit http://kcbqremembered.net. :)

;D ;D ;D Going to Funky Santee Saturday for unveiling ceremony.:D :D :D

I bet most people here who are old enough to remember when the "Q" meant KCBQ weren't in the area when it was a powerhouse.

Who remembers the flooded basement at the old radio ranch? I remember going down there once to check out the facilities used for a radio DJ school being run by Lee Marshall and Jeff "Ozzie" Sattler. They had, I recall, bricks and boards to walk on so you stayed above the water.

Yes, radio-darn, the water table was was high. And the elaborate "water level control",was a toilet-tank arm and
float, triggering a switch to a sump pump..and at one time, pallets were the flooring of choice.

So that's it, eh?

KCBQ deserves better than a tomb stone.

Garrett,

I hope you're just being flippant. There were many people that worked long and hard to get the KCBQ monument to become reality. Shotgun Tom, Chris Carmichael, Tom's wife Linda, Neil Ross, Bill Lipus, the city of Santee officials, the Seaman-Poe Monument Co. and Charco Construction among others. I realize that all involved would like to think that KCBQ could still be what is was and that the towers and building still existed. But times change, tastes change, technology changes, and land values go through the roof.

The monument is A TRIBUTE, not a tombstone or a memorial. It is a tribute to all who worked there and had FUN there and to all the listeners that made KCBQ a part of their lives.

Please when you have the chance go by and take a look and I hope you will change your mind about it being a tombstone...

Thank you for noting the hard work of raising over $10,000 in nine months. Garrrettt is stuck in the (location can not be disclosed because he's a lone star) and probably won't see the monument.

I figured I'd get ambushed, but at least it got attention.

I am, in no way, trying to belittle the monument. I realize a lot went into it, and EVERYONE involved is to be commended, it was a good thing. Make NO mistake about that!

But the legentd KCBQ deserves more. Much more.

Well you did belittle it Garrett, calling it a tomb stone (tombstone). As for deserving much more, sure, what's your idea? Not to make fun of your idea; but if you have something bring it to the table. We believe (the committee) that no other radio station has a monument and fitting one -- in the U.S. There is a historical society in Santee and part of the agreement is to furnish something for that -- so our work is not done.

Ok, sorry, I should not have called it that. What do I have in mind? The ONLY thing that I have in mind, is a Top 40 CHR using the KCBQ call letters. That is the ONLY thing that will be fitting enough. If Channel 933 were to be "KCBQ 933," for example, that would make be fitting. But that is it.

I feel the same way about "B-100" BTW...

I picked up a fascinating book at the event "Aircheck - The Story of Top 40 Radio in San Diego" by David Leonard. It's full of stories about the people that made it what it was, and how it evolved during that era.

LOON!! It will never happen so don't wish for it. Plug in your I pod. Thank you.

There's no need to call people names for speaking their opinion.

My opinion is that there isn't a station on the air here now worthy of the call letters. They did resurrect KPRI on the dial as a tribute which is one of the better local stations, but it isn't that similar. The old KPRI was freeform rock with few commercials, the new one is a play it safe AAA station with the usual long ad blocks.

I do think KCBQ 105.7 sounds better than "The Walrus" but they'd have to be fully staffed with live local personalities and a connection with the community to do it justice. I'm pretty sure though that very few of Channel 933's audience would care, and Salem Communications would fight tooth and nail any FM Station in the same market using the call letters.

Salem has no legal right to "KCBQ FM" and never did. Salem never owned the FM station. FM and AM are separate. The only thing I could see is Salem not wanting "KCBQ" used as a name, since they own KCBQ AM. I do not think they would fight "tooth and nail." Does Salem own a trade mark on "KCBQ?" I do not think Salem cares.

Honestly, I do not even care if 933 were to even use the KCBQ call letters on air. Does anyone even know that their call letters are KHTS? Nope! All they need to do is be KCBQ and say "KCBQ FM" once an hour, and that is it.

105.7 can not be "KCBQ" officialy becaues the signal is licensed in mexico, but they could call themselves "KCBQ" although that would not make much sense, and again, Salem would have concerns about the name.

Back to reality, I realize that there is little chance of that happening. I just want to make the point that just giving KCBQ a stone monument is not enough. I know a lot went into that monument. But why doesn't San Diego have a heritage set of call letters like every other major market? Please do not get offended, I'm just trying to convey a point, and I am standing by that point. I'm sure its a lovely monument. But I also wish for KCBQ to get more.

If the call letters went to 105.7, it would be XKCBQ, or XHKCBQ!

Speaking of heritage calls... didn't San Diego used to have a 3-letter call on AM (before my time)? (I'm thinking of KGB 1360.)

That is correct; KGB San Diego 1360 AM. There was one more three letter call; it's somewhere out there in history land.

I just realized, I should be more clear: San Diego does not have a set of heritage "Top 40" call letters. KGB FM would qualify, but they're being used for Classic Rock, not Top 40. But, I guess San Diego is fortunate to have KGB and KPRI still in use.

Although it's talk radio, 1170 KCBQ is still here. As for call letters, I'd really prefer 136 KGB,
instead of that hideous KLSD!
