KCBS #1 IN JANUARY ARBITRON

The January 6+ PPM numbers have KCBS in first (5.6), ahead of KGO (5.5), KQED-FM (5.3) and KOIT (4.8).

KOIT's number was a 3.5 drop from the top spot (at 8.3) in the Holiday book.

Haha... and here they've now signed up to spend all this money in Los Angeles to launch a new CHR when they probably would have gotten a lot more mileage out of just turning 97.1 into a simulcast of KNX.

To see the ratings grid for the 6+ overall publicly released data, check the www.radio-info.com link below:

http://www.radio-info.com/site/markets/grid/san-francisco

Note: the following stations were missing from the grid:

JAN. 2009 HOLIDAY FORMAT OWNER

KSRT-FM 0.3 -- Regional Mexican Lazer
KALX-FM 0.1 -- Variety University of California - Berkeley
KRSH-FM 0.1 -- AAA Sinclair Telecable

The next ratings period is February 2009: 2/5/09 - 3/4/09 with the 6+ overall data to be publicly released on 3/25/09.

And good ol' KFRC 1550, listed as KYCY on All Access' ratings grid, was in an eight-way
tie for 49th...

Make that an eight-way tie for 50th...I wuz off one after re-checking... ::)

Speaking of K C B S' Number-One status, I could not help but notice on BOTH the San Francisco and
San Jose Radio-Info ratings grids that 740's simulcast on KFRC-FM showed a "-" (or a 0.0 rating?)...

106.9 MC: "The $95,000,000 White Elephant"...

Since 106.9 frequency is *NOT* doing very well in raitings, should they flip back to "Classic Hits" or "Adult Hits"? I heard most people who listen to KCBS tends to listen to AM740 instead of 106.9 FM. You have to realized that SF is very hilly terrain.

KFRC will never return on FM. Look at the numbers for Classic Hits (oldies) KEarth 101 LA # 2 25-54 The format is DEAD.

Maybe if they were # 1, then I'd change my mind but they are number TWO and nobody wants to be number TWO.

106.9 KFRC-FM didn't show in the PPM because it has now been absorbed by the KCBS calls...the simulcast has been officially noted by Arbitron & they will never be shown as individual frequencies again.

Thank god someone knows how this works..E-dawg, did you ever notice KFOG's San Jose signal is not listed anywhere either! Simulcasts are nearly always now reported with the primary stations calls ONLY. Back to KCBS, although specifics can't be quoted...KCBS is also at or near the top 25-54, compared to a usual rank just inside the top 10 pre-FM simulcast--this is turning into a huge win. As for 1550, this is the first time the station has shown up 4 consecutive weeks at better than a .1...give it a chance...people are going to have find it organically...no marketing, no nuttin!

Arbitron calls this "Single Line Reporting" and stations that are 100% simulcasts can elect single line reporting and consolodate all simulcasts in a market under the elected primary calls. Arbitron dies not "note" the simulcast, but, instead, follows the desire of the stations as recorded on each facilities SIP (Station Information Packet).

KRTH is 6th in 2-54 in the January PPM, and 8th in the 4th week of January.

This is a good performance for KRTH, and reflects the change from Oldies to Classic Hits and the skills of Jhani Kay... but it is not second.

New KOIT slogan:

"96.5 KOIT, Light Rock, LESSSSS talk. Arbitron rated number 4 for listening at work."

The PPM does not break out at-work listening. It only shows at home and away from home listening.

Always insightful David...I was so wrapped up in making sure it was understood that the FM counted that I forgot the actual way to explain it as total line! As to the oldies question, do you think someone else will attempt it in SF? CBS will not, but Entercom maybe? Or CC if they choose to dismantle smooth jazz?

So, it looks like some of us were right all along: the future (and the present) of radio broadcasting is FM. As for me I'm all in favor of that proposal to turn TV channels 5 and 6 into an extended FM band as should have been done three decades ago.

kgo must have spent alot of money on Gil Gross (is he in LA?), then they dumped Greg Jarret, and never put in a permanant host to take over for the now caged "lion of the left" in the 10-1 slot. didn't kgo have 30 years of #1 ratings? As they say "news is a bore on of 74." But I think people, given the state of the economy, like comfort food radio like kcbs. Owens and Burns should realize there are fwer peopl that are blowing $200. at so fancy restuarant now days.

Amazing--somebody finally beat KGO.

What "they" would you mean? KCBS is cuming over 1.2 million a week, is #1 in AM drive, and is proving that the FM simulcast works. Boring?

They've been doing pretty much the same thing for 40 years. Looks like it works. The story here is pretty clear: KGO's reign is over (and this time, without a Christma music "asterisk").

It was a joke, David...perhaps not a funny one, but a joke nevertheless.

Actually, KOIT recently made a slight adustment to the slogan. It's now: "...Arbitron rated number one for those who work." . I'm not sure what that could possibly mean, or how you would quantify that.

At first glance it means a couple of things to me..."For those who work"
1) In this economy with so many people laid off or terminated. So those that are working listen to KOIT.
2) The people that are actually performing their duties instead of surfing the net at their desks and such.

Maybe that is what KOIT is trying to convey.
