KCEZ Chico Flips to CHR/ Top 40

So, the wait is over. Results Radio flipped Oldies 102.1 to Power 102 at noon on Wednesday. I am truly glad someone finally did this. I wish them the best of success!

The old website (http://www.chicooldies.com) has the announcement:

Today marks the final day of broadcast for the classic hits format on 102.1 FM. Effective today at 12 noon, this frequency has become a new hit radio station for Chico, Paradise, and Oroville called Power 102.

We know this will be disappointing news for the fans of Oldies 102.1. Our DJs including Big Papa Beau Reyes and Tom Kelly will have new opportunities within our company to broadcast to the Chico audience. We will continue to serve advertisers seeking mature demographics with classic rock Thunder 100.7 (KTHU) and adult hits 92.7 Bob-FM (KBQB). We have been proud to bring you Oldies 102.1, and we sincerely thank you for your loyalty and listenership.

For a few years now, Chico has been without a contemporary hit radio station. Our company has identified this as an extraordinary opportunity to serve both local advertisers and a family audience demographic as a complement to our existing stations. Power 102 will be a Northern California local radio station that plays today’s biggest hits and features local personalities.

I listened for about five minutes.  Too much hip-hop and gangsta-ism for me, but I'm not a tween or twentysomething. Never listened to the 50/60/70s format either. Guess this also means the end of Christmas 102.1 for those 6 holiday weeks.

So Power 102 will be like The Bob FM Simulcast with 92.7 in Chico and 107.1 in Redding, playing the same songs but with different linears.

Hmmm, well, maybe sorta.

"Morning Host for Power 94 in Redding and now Power 102 Tad Shackles says, “As far as music and commercials it will literally be identical to Redding's Power 94, like the exact same song at the exact same time.”

I am 25 years out of their demographic, so I could barely stand listening for more than a few songs. They only ID Chico, so maybe the morning DJ was wrong. I didn't listen in the AM, so perhaps mornings are more noticeably simulcast than afternoon.

Thats how Bob FM 92.7/107.1 works

So on 92.7 in Chico you'd here:
Song
(Male Voice)"Music for people with ears, and something between them"
(Female Voice) "92.7 Bob FM'
Commericial

In 107.1 in Shasta Lake/Redding you'd hear:
Song (same song that is being played on 92.7)
(Male voice)"Music for people with ears, and something between them"
(Female voice)"107.1 Bob FM"
Commericial(Same one on 92.7)

101.7

I now understand why ESPN FM 101.7 went dead. I heard an ad on KPAY, evil talkmeister of the north, announcing that they were the new Chico home for the World Champion SF Giants. The last couple years, the Giants had been on the AM-FM simulcast of ESPN.

The really good news is that the Giants will be preempting lots of hate talk all summer long.

when I drove though I have to say mapleton's sounded the best. I'm choking on that thought. Deer Creeks was bland and disorganized. Mapleto's sound hot and well put together. Results is just to thug to sell in chico I think. There will be listeners who love it but recall club 96.7

Too much thug equals too few business' buying it.

There was definetly a hole for some time now. But now it's too crowded for the piece of the pie. Start thinking new formats for the loser of the three.

A good localized AAA?? BacK to Mod AC?? Rockabilly???

Power 102 is too thug? Power 94 always had a rythemic lean, but its really not too "gangsta"

I would agree. But it's not the first time that someone on the board has brought that up. And if preception is reality, Power 102 should be thinking very carefully about managing their brand as SUPER female friendy.
