KCJJ

Just wondering here in Chicago, what the station is doing now. I used to get them
good at night, not anymore.

Midway Airport put their travel station on 1630. I can hear some music in the background
at night, it's not very easy to listen to though.

What is their lineup like now? Is anybody listening?

I never see any ratings for them.

When they first signed on 1630 they came in loud and clear at night.

Thanks,

TR 1992

The last I heard, they were talk by day and oldies at night during the week and hot AC on the weekends, but according to their website as of right now, they're airing oldies instead of hot AC so that format may have been dropped.

Nope,, I live in Indianapolis and can get KCJJ here at night,,, I dont know the day time format because it doesnt come in, but at night they are airing Hot AC-CHR at night with a syndicated network, not sure which one,, But anyway its the best of the 80s 90s NOW,, but I dont hear hardly any gold, its mainly Hot AC,, but its not real light hot ac,, they do play stuff like Kesha, and Lady Gaga and most the current Rhythmic POP and Dance product.. Its the only AM station I get here that plays music. They call it the Mighty 1630 KCJJ,, I like their oldschool jingles and station IDs. The station is usually very reliable to listen to when driving around, especially during the winter months, but it likes to have Deep Fades alot and gets some, but not much interference from a station in Georgia, and another in Wyoming with Spanish,, the only 3 stations in the U.S that are on 1630. When I visited my NOW EX girlfriend in Virgina I could even just barely get KCJJ there at night as well, although the signal was weak, and it would die out when the engine was started. If your in Chicago, try driving outside the metro area at night, It should Boom in there, but being in a metro area, even local AMs are noisy.

Still the Steve morning show, then music, then LA syndicated talkers Kevin & Bean during the daytime.

They run Mike O'Meara's podcast also and Cooper Lawrence's talk show in the evening.

They also have Robb Spewak on Friday Afternoons. He runs a Classic Hits variety show, and a good one at that. It's probably the best piece of programming on KCJJ.

Clearly management lets Robb play whatever he wants, and he has great musical taste.

Thank you to everyone who answered my questions. They sound like a very interesting hometown
station that serves Iowa City well. I like the fact that they try to program to a lot of different people
and different tastes. I wish we had a station like them in Chicago.

I do wish their website would have more information about their hosts and schedules. I think radio
websites should have schedules on their site. This is very important for stations like KCJJ, that have
such a wide variety of programming. It would help people that may have just happen to listen to a show
they just happened to catch while dial hopping. So if they liked that show, they knew were to find it.

Does KCJJ ever make into the ratings? I haven't been able to find any thing about them.

I think on weekends they mainly play music. They certainly are a unique station, and one that is a dying breed: a non-corporate owned locally programmed station.

KCJJ is certainly unique and puts out a great signal for being in the upper AM band.

Clubber, you mentioned not knowing the music network that's on KCJJ. Unless its changed since I last heard...and if they're airing Cooper Lawerence I'd say it didn't, they're running music from Dial Global's Hot AC Total 24/7 format. I know this because I used to frequently listen to Saturday Night 80's on KCJJ, which was a program on the Hot AC feed until very recently. I used to use DG's then Bright AC service on a station I used to program in Indiana. It's great from a musical standpoint and hasn't changed much...even after merging with Jones' Hot AC.

They haven't shown up in the Cedar Rapids Arbitron ratings for quite some time, unless KCJJ prefers not to have them published to the public.

It's only 30 miles north of IC but their signal is very difficult to get in Cedar Rapids. For some reason it travels east and south much better. I could get it in western Illinois fairly easily.

You hit it right on the head. They use the same Dial Global Satellite Feed they've used for the past 10(?) Years. Heck, it's better than MIX 96.5 (WMT-FM) anyways.

KCJJ was one of the more active affiliates of Westwood One's WJFK/DC-based "Don and Mike Show", which explains the replay of the Mike O'Meara podcast and the shows by former D&M producer (and current O'Meara podcast member) Robb Spewak.

Robb and Mike both have even made trips to Iowa to interact with KCJJ and its audience.

I recall seeing on DCRTV that O'Meara (who does mornings, separately, with Kirk McEwen on the Citadel classic rocker in DC) has picked up a second broadcast podcast "affiliate". His former radio partner, Don, is soloing at former D&M affiliate KHTK in Sacramento, in the show's former time slot.

Yes, that station is in the Burlington, Vermont area, which was another strong market for the Don & Mike Show.

Cap'n Steve of KCJJ is a die-hard D&M fan, to be sure.
