KCJZ Up and Running (Barely)

In case anyone was wondering what was happening to Jess Feather's CP for Cambria, he just sold it to Adelman Investments for 30K. They managed by only four days to file a 302 before the CP expired. To get it on air ACAP (as cheaply as possible) they moved the transmitter site to a residential neighborhood in town (I believe a translator is already there) and dropped the ERP from 6.4 kW to 300 watts. Obviously, this is a temporary move as the signal only barely covers the town.

The original TX site (the KTEA site) was too crowded and plans to extend the tower were shelved when the coastal commission and SLO County turned the request down. BTW, KTEA is back on the block so we'll see if there are any takers. But it will be interesting to see what the new owners of KCJZ decide to do with it or how they program it.

The tower located on the old Cambria AFB -- (yes an old Air Force Base) is owned by Mappleton BC - who owns the 94.9 KPYG Cayucos (Formerly KOTR Cambria.) The tower was built without any permits.
Both 94.9 and KTEA use the top of the FM tower. KCJZ wanted to add a pole to the top of the tower and it did not fly -- with the locals.
However -- Mappleton wanted some big cash -- and KCJZ did not want to pay that much cash.

KTEA tryed doing the same thing as KCJZ. Building a small tower near the town. KTEA got caught and had to move to the old KOTR tower. KCJZ will have the same problems getting permission to build any type of tower -- as will the other Cambria CP -- the 3rd local FM station for Cambria. Adding the KCJZ antenna to the existing tower does not require permission from the County or the State. But adding a pole to the top of the tower does. KCJZ could have just used a lower section of the existing tower. MONEY.

Mapleton does not own that tower site. It's owned by a Mr. Schneider of Santa Maria. I know, I've spoken to him. Actually, given the needed clearances to other antennas and a pending telco service there is no more room on that tower for anything else--and that includes anything below the KTEA antennas. I've checked. There was some talk of diplexing KCJZ with KTEA but the cost would have been prohibitive.

Anybody heard the "new" 105.3?

It's an Adelman station. Not much credibility and bad reputation. Bet this is costing more than the $30k he and or a family interest paid for the CP at the very last minute to, literally, throw it on the air.

What's on the air?

At an HAAT of -57m and 300 watts, I don't of anyone who has or can hear it. On paper, the signal barely covers the COL (and as we know, Cambria is a town of hills and forests). Adelman is paying for the CP in $1000.00 per month installments. Rumor has it that they are planning to move the signal to Santa Margarita. Good luck.

If they can run a signal up the north county corridor; through Atascadero, Templeton and into Paso Robles, then moving the station would be worth doing because it sure won't be doing anything or worth anything in Cambria.

FYI: "Jesse R. Feathers" had his other CP in Oregon near Boise expire un-built.

Feathers paid about 96K for both CPs in Auction 79. As we know, he tried to sell them and had some tire kickers and a few offers (myself included) but he wouldn't budge much until it was too late. I know he wasn't paying much attention to the expiration dates on the CPs, believing he could get extensions for them, but the FCC stopped issuing those some time ago.

Hard to say what Feathers' ultimate plans were but, in my opinion, he would have been better off to just bid on one CP and spend the money building it out. Such is the luxury of hindsight.

I have no idea if Jason is related to Bob Adelman - the guy with wiskers and wears Hawaiian shirts. Maybe just the same last name.

Originally McCall, but he moved the CP to Huntington, OR and to 106.7 as a Class C1.
So far 3 McCall allocations have fled that city. One is on the air in Union, OR (103.1) the other also moved to Huntington OR 93.5 and now has a CP.

I see the FCC lists channel 293 A ( 106.5 ) as being alloted to McCall - for Spanish Forks Bc Inc. Did Feathers buy or sell the CP - to Spanish Forks ?? Thanks

The "allocation table" hasn't been updated in quite some time.

Here's the first move to 106.7 McCall
http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=16719

And here is his "minor change" in the 301-FM that he got the CP from:
"Exhibit 27
Description: ALLOTMENT

THIS IS A MINOR CHANGE APPLICATION TO CHANGE APPLICANT'S COMMUNITY OF LICENSE FROM MCCALL, IDAHO TO HUNTINGTON, OREGON PURSUANT TO 'REVISION OF PROCEDURES GOVERNING AMENDMENTS TO FM TABLE OF ALLOTMENTS AND CHANGES OF COMMUNITY OF LICENSE IN THE RADIO BROADCAST SERVICES', FCC 06-163, MB DOCKET NO. 05-210, RM-10960, ADOPTED NOVEMBER 3, 2006 AND RELEASED NOVEMBER 29, 2006. APPLICANT CERTIFIES THAT THE PROPOSED CLASS C1 FACILITY IS IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH SECTIONS 73.203(B) AND 73.3573(G) AS APPLICABLE. FURTHER DETAILS SUPPORTING THIS MINOR CHANGE APPLICATION ARE SET FORTH IN SUBSEQUENT EXHIBITS, INCLUDING THE TECHNICAL STATEMENT OF EXHIBIT 27 AND THE SECTION 307(B) ANALYSIS OF EXHIBIT 33. "

Thanks for the info. When a CP never gets built -- the channel goes back to the first allotment COL and Class. Someone new will get a chance to move out of McCall, Idaho someday.

Jason is son living in SoCal and is a distant "silence" part of the Bob Adelman family broadcast empire. The father Adelman owns stations in the Antelope Valley and a handful in Ridgecrest and California City -- a trainwreck operation. Adelman has lots of issues, FCC fines and several cases of overreactions to finances and station situations. Has a bad rep in the selling community in the dessert market. Will be interesting to see if more fines add up after the last deal in Ridgecrest, especially.
