That's why I'm trying to gather information. And KCKC had a better month last month, which according to the radio folks here would be impossible if they veered so far away from what you thought they should do.

You only gather information when it aligns with your feelings about how you think things work. If an expert says something contrary to your assumption, you argue rather than absorb.
No, because I don't have time to analyze every playlist and interpret the technique of every PD in America. The point is that even in the same format, there are multiple ways to program and rotate music that all will work. Unless you have access to data like MediaBase, you should really stop trying to analyze station formats and rotations. Seriously.
I wasn't the one who steered the conversation in that direction. I was simply saying that the station added songs which hadn't been played before the past few weeks in regular rotation (as is the case with many stations on an annual basis) and may have helped improve their ratings.
And that is why I mentioned "lunar rotations" which are "oh, wow" songs that get played maybe once a month in each daypart, about a week apart. It's on purpose.
I think I know what you are referring to and think those types of songs help spruce up a station's playlist.
Here we agree. That is the purpose... a little unexpected surprise, generally a song that passes testing but the PD is smart enough to know will not support regular rotations as it will crash and burn. The sign of a good PD who puts the needed time into the music is shown with that type of unusual variation of the normal mechanical rotations.
I think looking at the playlist of Mix 93.3, the song "I Don't Mind" by Usher was spun once in the early evening (like 6:57 p.m.) a few nights ago which is a song from 2014 which does not normally get spun on the station as a gold, but songs like "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake get spun about every other day on the station. I'm thinking that's an example of what you're referring to.
Just have to say it. When I was in college I somehow ended up watching "Soul Train" with a group of Black guys. There were surprised, because I was white, that I liked that music. Herb Alpert, who is white of course, performed, but he didn't do much., The guys in the band did most of the work (and they were Black). One of the guys watching made fun of the man "hitting his sticks". A few weeks later one of the guys watching told me Herb Alpert had the #1 song. I thought that was great. But it turned out the #1 song was "Rise". The song with the man "hitting his sticks" was "Rotation" and not nearly as popular.

However, I have noticed KZPT (Hot AC) playing things like Work It by Missy Elliot in regular rotation, while trailing behind KMXV (CHR) in the ratings which doesn't play it or many "oh wow" tracks but does play golds like This Love by Maroon 5 (a more "common" pop/rock gold) and typically more conservative sounding and office friendly than they (KZPT) are.
All those statements are your personal opinion. You have no listener research or data about the overall types of segues and sweeps that "work" on your station. So we have, here, one person's opinion vs. industry and station research worth millions of dollars.
There's more to these stations than the songs they play.
I think that while the song may test well (as do other songs 99.7 plays) it might only work as "lunar" songs rather than something in regular rotation, as you mentioned. KMXV similarly plays songs like that irregularly as part of segments like "Oh no you Didn't Just Play That."
Mix is a heritage station, but at times in the past has been bested by the other two pop stations in town, but I think they might have better programming skills IMO. If you asked me thevtype of music KZPT plays, it would be hard to answer.
