KCKN 1020 Roswell NM

Here in Houston, last night at 8:45pm CT, KCKN was booming in with Radio Vision Christiana programming. 1020 is usually fairly dead here, with KOKP and KDKA occasionally heard, and I don't ever remember hearing KCKN before. Maybe they were still on daytime antenna, but would be worth checking if you haven't heard them.

KCKN has been on a 1kw STA for a year after a fire. Theres also been a low rumbling turd sounding het on 1020.. here in Laramie, wy that het disappeared last night and I had my first ever logging on 1020. no idea if they cleaned up the 1kw unit or installed something higher power there.. I suspect thje later. Ironically, they just refiled for an sta extension on tuesday

Wednesday night, theres no rumbling het again . I checked with an engineer who'd know stuff and he said stuff has been repaired and back to normal

The signal is at times pretty good here in Laramie, WY but im North and east of the night pattern so it it gets very weak noisy and fadey at times. But KMMQ is no longer the dominant station on 1020 now

From the olden days of Long Island radio, a good buddy of mine wound up working at that very 1020 facility, back when it was Country.

Wow, had 'Big John' (or Big John Lybinski or Big John Libynski) really gotten into the genre as a country DJ. He sent me an air check some time back. Good stuff!

He and I have been out of touch for some time. Last I'd heard, John L had been transferred from Roswell to Nevada to take on music director duties at area 51.

Anyone here remember Big John and his days at 1020 in Roswell?

KCKN is booming in here as well this morning. I can usually hear it but not this strong.

It is noted just south of Santa Ana, CA, interfering with local KTNQ at night.

KTNQ paid for Roswell's move to 1020 with 50 kw, accepting in exchange horrible interference but getting authorization to go 50 kw nights itself.

WDAE, Tampa and WTAE, Pittsburgh used to frustrate DXers by both being on 1250.
For the same reason, If I owned the Roswell station, I would make it either KTKA or KTMQ.

It's a Spanish language religious station now, and does not use the calls but once an hour. But it would still confuse DXers at ID time!

@ David and a141:

This all perhaps is off-topic, but since the 1250 clash was already mentioned ....

Up near JFK Airport in Queens, WTAE was always the biggest nighttime-dominant signal.
Well, one night there was some monstrous Aurora that devoured them, and a bunch of us actually drove into Manhattan listening to WTMA Charleston SC. They were a good, exciting Top 40 station!

Only *once* did I hear WDAE Tampa. That was one overnight / MM. They were real faint, and it was not WTAE. All alone they were, barely readable up in Queens.
Only once.

Strong signal from KCKN last night in Chicago. At times overpowering KDKA.

New Mexico is still one state that I need to QSL. Does anybody know their contact information and if they verify reception reports.

Thanks radioman148. I'll give it a try.

I had a phone call a few weeks ago with the engineer who rebuilt the KCKN site and got them back to 50kw full time after running 1kw. they are on the night time pattern 24/7 right now until they fix the daytime stuff and switching equipment.. but theres not much difference between the day and night patterns

Good luck--I hope it helps.

The web site was not much of help, but SomeRadioGuy came to the rescue with a contact, which resulted in a quick e-mail verification. Thanks.

KCKN is in right now in the SW suburbs of Chicago (12:34 a.m. CT 10/6), battling with and sometimes topping KDKA. Matched to online feed. Piano music under female Spanish speaker was the giveaway. First New Mexico AM, to go with Channel 3 in Portales, an e-skip regular in the analog days.

Congratulations on new state heard tvnut. KCKN has been coming in real well the last week or so in the Chicago area. I have been hearing them on almost daily basis mixing in with KDKA. And yes ch.3 used to be a regular catch in the good old TV analog days.

Nice catches, guys! I heard something trashing KDKA several nights ago. But I didn't hang out long enough to ID it. I'll give it another try to see if I can "join the club".

1020 can be slightly problematic at my location, since local 1030 (WNVR)has been stzying on all night. Their site is about three miles from my house. It's null-able, and I'm in the null of the 120-watt night pattern protecting WBZ, but still a pest. If you zoom on on the night pattern map for WNVR. the red line appears to go right through my living room, right by where it crosses the south shore of Crystal Lake!

Can you receive WBZ or does WNVR trash it at night?
