KCLE 1460 Burleson sold

Nope.. massive in parts of PA for small town stations... i worked for a cluster that would sometimes have to run extra breaks on the massive 50kw fm country signal because we had more commercials than wed normally have time for.
Is high school wrestling bigger in PA than high school football or not?

Was 890 a daytimer only? I was scanning around one night to see if WLS still made it down here and was hearing an open signal.
Was a 250 watt daytimer when it was still serving Frankston. 🐸 is wrong on it being a daytimer now. After the move from KKBM at Frankston to become the 20kW KTXV at Mabank, it received 250 watts at night. Doesn't reach Dallas, but readily available in Mabank, Gun Barrel City, Kaufman, etc. I hear it in Tyler, too, only with a much reduced signal than the absolute flamethrower it is, here, during the daylight.

My mistake with the Grace Media Partners. I'm only aware of the group, using the same name, providing the high school sports packages.

no.. football is much bigger but wrestling on the radio is still popular

You’re right, I had forgotten about the greatly reduced night power, as the signal in DFW is lost in the pileup on 890. Some silent periods for the station haven’t helped. And I need to be more skeptical about Radio-locator.com info, though FCCData.com is correct.

Meanwhile, getting back to KCLE: The station filed a Resume Operations notice with the FCC today. Anyone hearing what they are broadcasting now?

Nothing but static in Mineola, and I should hear the signal from 1460 here if it were to, again, run at normal licensed power.

Local sponsorship of high school sports on the radio in small towns has more to do with business image building and virtue signaling, rather than any attempt to increase customer base. The business wants to be seen as involved in the community, which helps retain existing clients. Small town stations are able to take advantage of that; they are selling the illusion of having an audience rather than a quantifiable response that can increase revenue for those advertisers.

I don't necessarily think small town stations are selling an illusion. The advertisers who buy the high school sports package know they're not getting tons of listeners. Quantifying how much business they get from being on the small town station may be more difficult and may well be about image and virtue signaling, but that's a lot of what advertising is about anyway. Not sure if they still do it, but KMDO/KOMB in Ft. Scott, KS used to have a "sports booster" package. The businesses that bought it got spots throughout the year and advertised themselves as "sports boosters" around town. I'm sure the stations weren't billing seven figures a year, but they did quite well largely because they had so many boosters they needed a waiting list.

I also seem to remember the old Y95 from the late 80's/early 90's doing high school sports centered programming on Friday nights during the football season. I don't ever remember hearing play-by-play on it, but it seemed like one or two of the jocks would go around the Metroplex to area football games and do quick check-ins and broadcasts with score updates at the games. You'd also occasionally hear a quick recap of an exciting play, a friend get interviewed, or hear the cheerleaders do a cheer between songs. I don't know how much it boosted the bottom line, but Y95 routinely cleaned KEGL's clock with the younger demos. I always heard KEGL did better with the 25+ part of the 18-34 demo and probably posted better sales numbers.

We had a powdered metals manufacturing company sponsoring football and basketball on 97.5 The Hound .. i guarentee they were getting next to zilch response from advertising on the game, but they were a well known company that employed a good amount of locals

Here at the station I sell for, I can tell you this tight knit area listens to high school sports on air and online. When a person you see each week at a grocery store can name off 4 or 5 sponsors and as a fun little deal, I started asking if they heard last night's game (about 70% of those I asked had). Yes, I was shocked too, think about 20%. I likely asked 30-40 people, some clients, some employees, some just people I know. I'll sell you a thirty in each game of the football and basketball season we carry (post season games are included at no extra charge); 18 games in all, total 18 spots for $950. Sorry, we sold out. It's true. I'm living it today.
