KCMO

I was wondering if anyone had airchecks of KCMO in the late 70's. I seem to remember they were an affiliate of the ABC Entertainment network. Never heard them air the actual network newscast on the half hour, but they used the Entertainment sounder on-the-hour for their locally-produced newscast. Anyone else have memories of KCMO in this era?

Just that Music 81-KCMO was a great station. I grew up on KCMO, listening to Tony Sledge in the evening while doing homework. The day that the music died on KCMO was quite sad, but the era of AM contemporary music stations was at it's end. 1190-KJLA and KR-1340 tried to squeak a few more years out, but Q104 and ZZ99 were ready for their day in the sun.

I remember ZZ99 on a trip to KC in 1983.They had billboards all over town. What station is on that signal today?

98.9 is KQRC "The Rock" and has been since '92. I believe ZZ-99 flipped to smooth jazz as KCWV "The Wave" and then to "Soft, Mellow Easy Rock" later "Kansas City's Adult Rock" 98.9 The River KRVK. I remember 94.9 taking lots of shots at former ZZ-99 jocks, but I don't remember if that was when it flipped from KC-95 Country to KCKB "B-95" or when "B-95" became "Power 95." I fondly remember in the summer of '87 when people all over metro Kansas City woke up to "Power 95" bumper stickers placed at their doorsteps!

I remember reading that when KQRC first flipped to rock in 1992 a lot of rock fans were skeptical that the station would be around for long. They felt burned when a short lived rock 40 station flipped formats, I believe to rhythmic. Anyway it's almost 20 years now so those fears of KQRC not lasting have proved to be unfounded.

KXXR (106.5) was the rock station that flipped to rhythmic CHR in 1990. Although CHR was big in 1990, I wonder if KXXR had stuck with the rock format for another year, they would have caught the beginning of grunge and/or alternative becoming a mainstream format. Maybe they, instead of KQRC, would be here 20 years later.

When ZZ-99 went belly up, they switched to SMN's Pure Gold oldies format. After a year of that, they became The Wave, The River, and finally The Rock.

I've been looking for any airchecks information about Music 81 KCMO for years. I remember listening to the station as a young kid on my dad's am car radio in Emporia. From what I remember, it was a great sounding station. Did the changeover to talk happening in 1979 or '80. Was it announced before it happen? Was there any farewell with the old airstaff?

I worked at KCMO in the 1970s and up until 1986, on the FM when the killed the beautiful music format and went country. I did double (triple ) duty on the TV side, and AM and FM. In 1979, Gerry (Peterson) Cagle was the PD, and Al Casey prior to that. Al took most of the staff over to WHB in early '78, (Dan Donovan, Katfish Kelly). Station brought in Rich Brother Robbin in 1984 to program the country format.
