KCNL-FM

Before I left San Jose in 1999, I used to listen to KCNL-FM (Channel 104) and played Alternative music. I know a year or so ago it changed to a Spanish format, and I understand recently it went back to alternative. Can someone provide me their website link? I was curious who the jocks are and maybe streaming online so I can listen to them here on the east coast.

Thank you very much. I believe that was their old website link too. Since I moved away from the area, over the years I believe I thought it was 104.7 because I did try channel1047.com duhhh.

Are they currently running jockless? I didn't see any reference to on air personalities on their site or on their myspace page.
 
They're still on 104.9, but it doesn't sound like they plan on hiring DJ's, or any sort of staff. They have their music logs done in Vegas by the woman who was doing the logs for their internet site, and no 'official' PD onsite.
 
I didn't care for the previous Channel 1049 all that much, but the music sounds a lot better to me this time. Is the station generating any kind of buzz in the South Bay?
 
The San Jose people I know were excited that Channel 104.9 was coming back, but have been vocally disapointed by the execution. Most say its pretty boring now and not as good as it was before.

Since this one has to be sold if the company goes private, I don't imagine they will sepend anything on it.

They have no staff and from listening, it sounds like nobody cares. Sounds like someone dropped off their ipod and then went back to whatever it was they were doing. Its too bad. Even though the music sometimes went a bit too Hot AC for my personal tastes, it use to be a great station with a really unique vibe and I liked the variety.
 
If memory serves me correctly, when they went alternative in about 1998 while I was living in San Jose, they were jockless for quite a while too. I remember Creep by Radiohead was always played unedited in the rotation. Of course, KSJO with jocks played the unedited versions of all songs back then too.

I'm trying to remember. It might have been. But I do recall the first song played was "End Of The World As We Know It" by R.E.M. That would have been considered 90s though.
 
Yes, in '98 they started out with an adult-targeted Alternative format, which was 80s heavy with a little bit of 90s thrown in. I really liked it. When Star 101.3 flipped to 80s in 2000, KCNL changed to a current-based Alternative format. They had some signal problems which kept their numbers down, but it's my understanding that the problems have been eliminated. I could be wrong about that though.

It's still the worst South Bay signal, bar none.

Have to agree. Music sounds fine now and sounded fine before, just depends on how your tastes skew. Station will likely get some decent numbers out of the gate because the brand was missed and there doesn't seem to be many commercials. Long term, they will have issues if they don't build on the music.
