KCNL to change Callsign to KXSC

KDFC Classical Station will change the callsign's for KCNL to KXSC call letters they already being utilized by USC’s campus (via AM carrier current) and online-only station. KXSC was known at KSCR until 2010 when it was forced to change its call letters after receiving notice from an FCC-licensed station. According to Barnes, that’s part of the reason that USC requested the new call letters KXSC for KCNL.

KCNL just switched to Classical Today, in June the station will launch its new programing.

What do you mean KNCL switched to Classical today? I assume its not a simulcast of KDFC. What are they playing? Do they have announcers?

Yes, KCNL just started to simulcast with KDFC today, there is a announcer saying about "104.9 is now Classical, the Engineers are working on the Station", The Programing will start June 6th.

KCNL (KXSC Sunnyvale on-air) Website homepage: http://www.kcnl1049fm.com/

The former KCNL/now KXSC feed is different from the KDFC feed. (We'll call the four-frequency group "KDFC" to make it easier.) KXSC plays an announcement by one of the KDFC personalities every 10-15 minutes explaining that "KDFC classical music has returned to the South Bay; well, almost - while engineers work on the technical side of things. Classical music will be returning to the South Bay starting June 16th" (or similar words to that effect).

Don't forget that during the KDFC fundraiser, KUSF did not simulcast. They ran the same music selections for the most part, but they did not simulcast. This is likely because the status of KUSF is still in limbo, so KDFC didn't want to use KUSF's signal for the KDFC fundraiser.

It's likely that there is a similar situation with 104.9. It might well be that since the ownership transition hasn't completed yet, that there might be restriction about some aspect of programming that can't be run. Maybe there is ad inventory that must be finished out on 104.9 or maybe 104.9 can't be used non-commercially or something. It's probably a bureaucratic issue rather than a technical one.

as what the link above says
According to KUSC President Brenda Barnes,

“We have not set a date for when KDFC programming will begin yet. It is likely that we will take the station dark after closing for at least a few days just to get our technical plan in order. We are working with the staff of KCNL on the transition and will likely have a specific timeline by tomorrow. We will likely go on the air in test mode for a couple of weeks so that we have time to get the T-1 line installed (this creates a stronger quality signal). We are thinking we will begin broadcasting in earnest around June 16-18.”

I just hope they do something to keep the modulation level up. Classical on the radio doesn't really need 60 dB dynamic range (like it seems to have right now on 104.9).

The whole notion that "Radio" is the only way to enjoy one type of music or another individual station by station is absurd. We need a return to FULL SERVICE RADIO FORMATS.
Whether David, David, The Big A, (I'm not picking on you three either)or any of the other's believe it or not. Radio just might make a lot more money than they do now. The times I enjoyed KNBR and the other big AM's in "Frisco" was when they catered to all of us not just a select few! The PPM be darned! LOL...LOL...LOL! Remember the Term is "BROADCASTING" The owner's and programmer's need to grow a set or two or three and open their eyes and quit letting the CEO's (I know, "FAT" Chance) run away with all the money! Which is what is really happenning and ya all know it too! The time has come to break the mold and make a few new models. Take a chance and lets have a new day in Radio not just in America! lol...lol...lol. Remember to Vote in June! lol lol...get it? Then reality sets in again..........sigh......

Full service hasn't gone away. Nearly every local station of size has a morning show which includes music, news, weather, a sports report, and one or two personalities.

PLUS there are KQED Radio (#1 in Arbitron, don't forget), which is about as full of service as you can get with local, national, and international newscasts, music (ATC Weekends, Prairie Home Companion, etc), and KALW 91.7, which is news/talk during the day with a local news magazine and music from all over the world at night.

And there are KPFA and KPOO which also have a mix of personalities, local newscasts, and music.

So, what are you complaining about exactly?

To quote The Bard, "...full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

(I skipped the prior four words...)

That's quite a rant. How about some specific examples of things being done wrong and suggestions of specific actions that could be taken to make "a lot more money."

You might use some specific stations to illustrate either the good or the bad or the ugly.

Otherwise, you are no more relevant than an old Brooklyn Dodgers fan yelling "get oudda here!"

I remember that KDFC 89.9 and KDFC web edition shows the entire Fundraiser broadcast.

But not KUSF, and that was the point. So, there could be some extenuating circumstances regarding the purchase of commercial 104.9. This is just speculation on my part, but I think that if it was just a matter of bringing KDFC programming to 104.9, they could just use a stream or set up an FM receiver to pick up KUSF or KDFC from the air until facilities were upgraded.
