KCNZ 1650 Received in Pennsylvania

I was DXing near York, PA (about 90 miles west of Philly.)

Last week I was tuning up and down the AM band seeing what I could pick up when I stopped at 1650 kHz to see if I could get any new stations. Around 7:30 PM Eastern Time, I heard what sounded like a wrestling match on 1650. The station was under CINA out of Mississauga, ON, but was on top when CINA faded. I listened for a half hour, hearing a man mentioning Iowa City and Waterloo. At the bottom of the hour I heard a mention of "1650 The Fan."

I was unable to hear the station ID at 8 PM because CINA overpowered it, but I kept checking in at the top of every hour to try to hear the ID (I heard a couple of Fox Sports Radio references too.) A few hours later, at 1 AM, I heard the top of the hour ID-"KCNZ Cedar Falls/Waterloo." This is my first time receiving KCNZ. It was an 844 mile catch.

Nice catch.

KCNZ puts a respectable nighttime signal into quite a bit of the Midwest. Usually, however, it's not quite as strong as 1630 out of Iowa City (KCJJ?). You might want to try for that one also. The sticks are less than 100 miles apart in the eastern part of Iowa.

Those extended band stations make for some interesting DXing at night.

That is a good catch!

I haven't gotten it here, at least that I was aware of or with any ID.

If you have the time, it really pays to listen as long as possible to any given frequency of those stations because it can change quite a bit.

Yeah, 1630 KCJJ out of Iowa City is a semi-regular catch in Pennsylvania. It is rather strange that I can get KCJJ a lot, but KCNZ is so rare to get.
