KCOH sale...still on hold...or dead???

Been a year since word first broke about the sale to Paraclete Ministries. Then all the delays. Then...nothing.

Is this sale still in progress, or was it called off?

Presume the tight credit market was a major issue. The $8M+ sale price seemed high.

The last thing in the way of communication I saw was a filing back in December, titled "Notification of Non-Consummation." No details were included, and since there have been no follow-up filings I take this to mean the sale if off.

This is apparently the case. Here in Columbus, Ohio, there was a sale of a station, WRFD, from Salem Media of Ohio to the Christian Voice of Ohio which was approved by the FCC. A year after the FCC approval, Salem Media announced that the sale wasn't going to happen. Checking the FCC database for WRFD, they also have an "Notification of Non-Consummation" application on file with the FCC.

It is dead. So is the station. Sales stopped because of pending sale, and they did not resume. Things look very bleek over there.

noticed that media player stream has been unavailable for some time.......hope that it's not being cancelled for that reason

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. KCOH isn't even on the air over night, just a dead carrier until 6am. This is apparently a sad end to a legendary station. I hope things turn around for the station. Unfortunately that takes money, and from the sound of it, they don't have much to spare.

KCOH call letters stood for "Call of Houston," according to the history of a Houston broadcasting web site created by one whom I cannnot remember right now. I'll find out, or Chuck Tiller will know off the top of his head. KCOH started out as a "beautiful music" station.

I once mistakenly assumed that the COH stood for "City of Houston" and was once owned by the city, like WRR in Dallas was. I was completely wrong on that.

What could be done with KCOH? Well,, it's A.M. Your choices are right-wing talk or religious or sports. Of course, the obvious answer to me is left-wing talk, since we don't have one. Could it make it? It would be tough. Filling up the program schedule would be easy. There are plenty of syndicated left-leaning talkers out there. Just put in your local guys for morning and afternoon drive. Ah, but it would need someone with pockets deep enough to get it going.

I know what you righties are going to say. Air America tried that and didn't succeed. The problem with Air America was that its money came from people who wanted to get a quick return. Also, Air America spent its investment money BUYING low-rated radio stations rather then seeking affiliations.

We'll that's my opinion. KCOH is currently in the best position right now to succeed in that format, I think.

It really means "Kilo Cycles Over Houston" I work there,i see it on the wall in the Lobby all the time. I truly hope something works out over there. As for the dead carrier at night, That is what Mr. P wants. I've tried.

Had the chance to listen to the media player stream last night and now it has improved sound quality as well. The music was enjoyable and lasted until about maybe 3am. With efforts like this being made I too hope things turn around for this 57-year heritage station!

CALL OF HOUSTON was the name of the original company who started KCOH. Read the following history concerning KCOH. This information is made possible through the efforts of veteran Houston broadcaster Bruce Williamson. For many years, I mistakenly believed that the 1st format for KCOH was classical. As you will see in this link, there is a newspaper ad touting the good music played on KCOH. Learn about the sign on of KCOH on May 5, 1948:

By the way, take some time and learn about Houston radio and TV by explring the Houston radio History site. Like me, you will learn many things about Houston's rich broadcast history.
