KCOR Fm to KGSX

So no more Recuerdo in San Antonio? And since you did not specify, I assume you mean English pop?

Thanks for the heads up.

I tuned in and didnt hear anything. Would Univision really go after Mix? I cant even think of any Univision Top 40 stations off the top of my head.

BTW, its a HURBAN format...not Pop. Already talked to friends at Univision.

The format is a mix of Spanish Pop with a few Reggaeton tunes. Digital 104.1 should have jump on this when La Kalle 97.7 started simulcasting The Beat.

David, what would be an equivalent format/station in some of Univision's other markets?

It's Spanish pop, not Hurban. It's the equivalent of a Hot AC.

WKAQ-FM in San Juan or KAMA in Houston. Adult CHR or Hot AC would be the English equivalents.

It's 100% pop... the reggaeton songs ARE pop (crossover) and it includes pop, power ballads, a bit of bachata, a vallenato or two, etc. Whatever the hits in the target audience are.

Isn't this the same format Univision is trying to compete with in Houston KLOL?

KAMA is aimed straight at KLOL; pop format, female demos. And KLOL is in the process of being sold (forced CC divestiture) so KAMA may have that battle won in a few months (Liberman's XO format in Houston would be another competitor, although David could better compare/contrast the two.)

No, our version is considerably different. Our WKAQ in PR has been doing it for 39 years, in fact.

Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Calle 13 are Reggeaton artists. So by me saying 95X is a Mix of Spanish Pop with a few Reggaeton tunes is correct.

Posted by: DavidEduardo-No, our version is considerably different.

So what's the difference between 95x, KAMA and KLOL?

Actually, you are right, but the reggeaton is very limited to complement Spanish Pop

Really, there is some difference (but not really much) in the music selection between KLOL and KAMA. Shakira, Julieta Venegas, Mana, La Quinta Estacion, Elefante would be some of the artist you should be hearing now at KGSX (assuming KGSX and KAMA are the same. I am assuming they are since I already heard KGSX say "tu musica" in their liners.)

I prefer to think that there is reggaetón crossover which is part of Spanish language CHR. Not all reggaetón is crossover, as it is too hard-core. But the kind of reggaetón songs being played all over Latin America on pop (there is no spanish word or term for CHR) stations are definitely crossovers, so they are pop core as well as reggaetón songs.

It´s just like pop stations playing La Gota Fría or Juan Luis Guerra. The songs are CHR, even if they have a merengue or vallnato origin. In the context of a pop format, the reggatón tunes are pop, are part of the pop experience, and are "in format" as much as Aventura and Xtreme are.

Remember that CHR, in any language, is a blend of the big hits lots of people like from a variety of genres. In Puerto Rico, WKAQ-FM (KQ-105) plays English songs, Spanish ballads, Spanish language pop, Spanish language borderline rock and alternative, merengue, salssa and reggaetón hits and anything in between. The mix of genres over the years changes frequently and no two eras will be the same.

So, did the Recuerdo format get housed anywhere, like KCOR 1350? I seem to remember 95.1 dumped Recuerdo for Amor several years ago, and KCOR 1350 kept the Recuerdo format at least during a few dayparts.

Nope. SA and ABQ are two markets where the Recuerdo concept swung old; it depends on first generation immigrants who grew up in smaller markets in Mexico. SA does not have that many of those in the 30-44 demo.
