I only started listening to this station when I was scanning while looking for KCCK's Iowa City translator.

It's weird in that Q106.5 and 100.7 The Fox are both Clear Channel stations with the same "Classic Hits" format, but (in my opinion) Q106.5 has a MUCH better music selection.

Q106.5 plays much more classic ROCK and 80's stuff, whereas the Fox seems to play crustier 60's Oldies stuff and 70's fluff (ELP, etc). Maybe KKRQ is just going for an older demo. Who knows? (I do think Shawna Roberts was a real breath of fresh air in the market, though. Her on-air attitude sort of reminds me of when Monica West was doing nights at KRNA.)

Just my two cents...

Mix 96's New Positioner...

Mix 96, KMXG, also changed their positioner recently to "Today's Hits & All Your Favorites". I've heard the jocks mess that one up though quite a bit.

:)

Re: Mix 96's New Positioner...

MIX did have sort of an problem saying 80's, 90's and today, then, oh, here's Fleetwood Mac from 1977.

Re: KCQQ vs KKRQ

Since when did "Tommy Lang" become a critic for what is and isn't good radio?? How in the hell can one criticize a station like The Fox with the HUGE numbers they got and be taken with even the smallest amount of credibility. Or is it when you work for a "renegade pirate" (translate "insignificant joke") of a station like KCJJ you can say whatever you want because no one listens? What is KCJJ's format anyway?? I want to say it's a combination of "Jack" and "Sound Off"....which when combined would make it the "Jack Off" format. That HAS to be the worst sounding radio station since college radio was invented.

You make some very intelligent, well-reasoned and thought-provoking points there... How can I argue with that???

At no point did I say KKRQ had a _bad_ format, just that it skews older and the music selection wasn't my cup of tea. (I believe I made liberal use of the phrase "in my opinion".) Obviously the thing is getting numbers. With Bob & Tom leading off the day and no more competition in the market, they're in a good position. Add Shawna Roberts on the midday and a vet like McGill on afternoon drive, and they've got a winner on their hands. Just because I say that I _personally_ don't like the music doesn't mean it's not working. Geez. Did you secretly read comments about your mom into my post, too? ;)

"renegade pirate", "insignificant joke"..call it whatever makes you feel better. The bottom line is I'm having more fun while having more responsibility than I've ever had in this industry. Oh, and I'm making more money, too. ;)
We have a loyal listening base, bill well, and get good numbers in Johnson County (from what I've been told by people who have the ability to break down the numbers, of course). Oh, and the ultimate end-all and be-all decisions come from across the hall, not Atlanta, Cincinnati, etc. And the station actually gets to KEEP the money it makes!

I also get to work for a true community radio station. Steve told me when I started that local public service was going to be a big part of my job. We don't just shuffle off the public affairs programming to a 10-minute segment on Sunday mornings. We actually use the station to HELP people who need it. That's a good feeling. (And not just the corporately-mandated "YAY FOR THE TROOPS!"-type PR events, either.)

I don't know many people still in this industry (and I'm guessing you are or were at some point yourself) who trully LOVE their jobs anymore. They may enjoy it, and it's certainly better than slicing meat in a deli (with apologies to Tony Kornheiser). But do they really LOVE going into work every day?

If so, more power to you. I'm glad you found your calling. I found my "happy place". It's a locally owned mom-and-pop radio station in a cornfield. And I don't need to apologize for it.

ADDENDUM: This wasn't meant to come off as an anti-corporate radio tirade. All I did was say I personally prefer the music selection on Q106.5 over what KKRQ is playing right now. How this became about me and KCJJ, I have no idea...
And hopefully I won't have to bring anyone's mom into this. ;)

Re: KCQQ vs KKRQ

Okay, now back to the subject. After more listening, I don't think Q 106.5 and KKRQ are even the same format (despite both having the "Classic Hits" moniker). During the Q midday show, I've heard Nirvana, the Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam and Melissa Etheridge. In a way, it's probably what KRNA should have done 4-5 years ago when Cumulus decided to go head-to-head with The Fox. (It might not have worked, but it certainly couldn't have done any WORSE...)
