KCSN NORTHRIDGE-LOS ANGELES ANNOUNCES FULL-TIME TRIPLE A FORMAT

Well well well...... Worth a listen! It's about time the L.A. area got another AAA station since the AAA-version of The Sound left us fans in the fall of 2008. NP: Apple Scruffs-George Harrison followed by Joe Bonamassa-Quarryman's Lament (when's the last time Joe has been heard on any over the air radio station? Answer: Probably Never or rarely... I remember several posters on the now-gone discussion board of 100.3 having requested Bonamassa... One poster had the SN 'Bonamassafan'. Of course he was never played on The Sound to my knowledge)

Orange County listeners have no choice but to listen online
Here's the article posted today by 'Triple A Radio'

Here's a link to KCSN website followed by the link to the playlist and the last link you can plug in to your WinAmp player

When did they become a classical format? Last time I listened to them (2007-8) they were playing blues....

I think they were full-time classical before you were listening then ... Though you might have tuned in when they had a blues show. The classical moved to HD

Yes! Another station to play Kings Of Leon "Use Somebody"....I haven't heard that song on the radio in....minutes...

In all honesty, though, it seems like AAA is an obvious format hole to fill for a station like KCSN. I always thought the best part about Indie was that it created listener awareness of alternative music that wasn't being heard elsewhere on the radio, and whether through request or not, forced KROQ and KYSR to pick up on some of this music. Hopefully, this has the same effect on KROQ, KYSR, KLOS and KSWD.

I seriously doubt there will be much impact on those stations. Especially those two dinosaurs of classic rock.

I'll settle for the addition of one or two songs that we otherwise wouldn't have heard.

Finally!

Finally! Something worth talking about on this board.
By the way-they have 128 kbps streaming and it sounds just great!

Thanks, SRF, for letting us know! Turned it on this morning and am really enjoying it! Heard Sting's "Why Should I Cry For You" earlier...great song NEVER played on the radio. Also noticed they played Elton's "Razor Face" and Mellencamp's "The Real Life" very early this morning...excellent deep cuts from those albums. The stream sounds really good, too!

Hope all is well in your world!

By a freak circumstance checked this thread, refreshed it and voila, saw your post JP!! Yeh I'm OK always searching for the perfect AAA radio station - the only one that exists is in my brain!!!! ;D

But there's plenty to choose from online - OTA as well as Internet-only. So far the best OTA IMO is still WXPK White Plains NY better known as 107.1 The Peak. They have the best combo of a decent and somewhat varied playlist (every now and then an 'Oh Wow!' song) along with DJs who entertain and inform without being intrusive or arrogant. The best Interent-only station is Legato Cafe (LegatoCafe.net).

Kudos to KCSN who sound a WHOLE lot better than the recently added Dallas area station KKXT (back in November, way too sleepy). Another new AAA station which came in around New Years is V107.3 in Cleveland.

Take care my man 8)

There must be something wrong with me. I'm an Adult (age 58) and I like Alternative, but I don't like this version of Adult Alternative! This KCSN stuff is much too tepid and MOR for my tastes. Sort of reminds me of K-WEST circa 1978, filliing a niche that I am happy to do without. The quality of their stream is excellent, however. In summary, bring back Indie!

Perhaps this will spur KROQ, KSWD and the others to be a little more adventurous with their playlist. Nothing like competition to improve the product.

It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers KCSN pulls in with this new format and how it will impact the other like format stations.

KROQ/KSWD vs KCSN = elephant vs flea

As a non-commercial station, what will be most interesting, particularly to them, isn't how they impact the other stations, but will AAA listeners step up to the plate and contribute more dollars than classical audience did come pledge drive time.

As far as the Sound goes, it is a classic example of proving David right and everyone else who argues with him wrong. By tightening the playlist like a blood-stopping turnicate and playing only the most tedious tracks of the classic rock library, they have been able to steadily increase the ratings. See, it is a simple relationship really. Station gets steadily worse, ratings go steadily up. They don't even pretend to play Kings of Leon anymore.

As usual, your take is right on the money. In a tough economy, non-comms must really be hurting during pledge drives.

As to The Sound, love the 'blood-stopping tourniquet' line. I was in my garage this afternoon replacing some lights and I turned on the boombox to 100.3 to hear White Wedding, Join Together and Paradise City. Since they liberally play GunsNRoses and Blue Oyster Cult, etc. I find very little difference between the playlists of100.3 and 95.5.

They (the Sound) had a several month transition period where they added the added softer cuts from the hard rock library (songs like "Goin' to California" by Led Zep) while they phased out modern rock heroes like Elvis Costello and XTC. But the real switch can be traced easily to the KMET Finally-a-Friday day. After that, the restraints were pretty much removed and everything in the Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and Guns & Roses and other similar groups' catalogues were added. I've even heard Judas Priest several times. Why they don't just change imaging to classic rock is a mystery to me. It doesn't bother me, but the hard classic rock presented in a AAA setting must be confusing to many listeners. (side note - guess there is history of that on the 100.3 frequency since Scott Shannon's Pirate Radio often played bands like New Order and Depeche Mode next to Poison, Motley Crue and other Hair Bands).

By the way, if you need to set your watch, it is still the Police and the Cars at the top of every hour at the Sound. Count on it.

Agreed, the worst part of KSWD is the imaging. I'll switch on the station, hear a decent song, and want to keep listening and then that monotone, horrible station ID starts and I lose all interest. The music does NOT match the station at all. If I judged strictly by the imaging, I would guess the "Sound" of Southern California is funeral dirges.

I agree, it's the imaging of the Sound that ruins the station for me. There is nothing rock n roll about it.
It's so whitebread and barely ever makes any sense. I find myself yelling :"Shut TF Up!"

Here's an example- In a syrupy sappy voice, "Finally, a radio station designed to listen to"

WHAT!? Why had nobody thought of that before?! A radio station that is designed to LISTEN to!

How groundbreaking! Up until now, programmers across the country have been thinking "Let's design a station for people to NOT listen to".

The Sounds imaging is a lame as KCSN playing Dave Mathews covering Jimi Hendrix.

Yes, the imaging bothers me as well. That's Nick Michaels. He has a great voice and the production values and writing are pretty good, but for some reason he sounds a bit snarky. Sort of a holier than thou delivery. He's gone from KFI to KNX to The Sound and was even heard on KLOS for a short time before The Sound picked him up. He been over used in this market. By that I mean, on too many stations over the last decade. There's little energy in his delivery. The Sound had better imaging when it first went on the air than they do now, plus most of the jocks were hired for AAA and now that it's Classic Rock, many sound out of place. I find middays to be very annoying and nights to be kind of light. The music is what I'm there for, but the station could be so much more with just a little tweaking.
