KCSN to air Latin Alternative

I think a few of you might want to re-assess what the musical position of Latin Alternative is as hosted by Josh and Ernesto.

I'm not against the show. It's certainly unusual and eclectic. I just question it's appeal among the listeners who are not Hispanic, and the likely short supply of those who would listen to such a show in the San Fernando Valley.

Among the artists mentioned on the FB page are Maná, which is ultra-AC, Carlos Vives, who is a soap opera star who does Afro-Antillean Colombian folk music, Juanes who, in addition to being very much over, is ultra-pop sounding, and Aterciopelados, a rock band that is pretty much gone with the departure several years ago of their singer. And you have Calle 13, which is reggaetón (hip hop with a panamenian flavor) and Molotov, which is hip hop with cuss words.

It's closer to World Music than "alternativo" (which it really is nowhere close to being) and, as I said, eclectic. If that's the intent, then you are on track.

Let me say it again. Red Hot Chili Peppers as the featured artist on the front page?
I'm guessing that RHCP fans get what they need on kROQ and 98.7.

I'm also guessing that those who choose to listen to KCSN rather than KROQ or 98.7 do so for exactly the reason that they do NOT want to hear Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I agree. I tune in to the public radio stations to hear music I'm not going to hear on the commercial stations. I want to hear creative programming that fits together - needle drops that have good transitions

I should address Talentfilter's concern about ANOTHER syndicated show. Both Josh and Ernesto are FROM L.A. They are local. They also are as knowledgeable in the field as anyone. So the fact that is syndicated is irrelevant. THIS is their homebase.
We are developing P1s for the weekday format.

Sky, I’m a fan of many syndicated shows but I don’t want KCSN to buy such shows when its meager budget can be better spent on other needs! I’m also confused by the rationale for slotting "Latin Alternative" in your programming. Just who are the P1’s that you’re developing with your weekday format??

I have nothing against Rob, but his show doesn’t showcase "the local singer songwriter scene" that you’ve recognized in L.A. So why choose "Acoustic Café" instead of "Tied to the Tracks," which was produced at your home base and actually featured our local scene? By the way, "Mountain Stage" is the most acclaimed live concert program in AAA syndication at http://www.npr.org/series/mountain-stage/

Respectfully, you underestimate my sense of fiscal responsibility when you profess "buys shows, etc..." For we have a fiscal plan in place to make us self-sustaining for the first time ever within this year.
To that very notion. we have made a major commitment to Americana and Roots music--a 12 hour block on Sunday and a substantial portion of our weekday programming. Moving forward, we are counting on the fans of those genres to support that commitment through increased membership and pledges.

Look for some significant announcements to come within the next few weeks...

To that very notion. we have made a major commitment to Americana and Roots music--a 12 hour block on Sunday and a substantial portion of our weekday programming. Moving forward, we are counting on the fans of those genres to support that commitment through increased membership and pledges.

Granted, KCSN still has Americana and Roots music in its programming. But its commitment to this audience has dramatically diminished compared to the station's programming history -- afterall, its imaging was "Arts & Roots Radio"! Historically, this audience have been more loyal to KCSN than those of other genres. By cancelling "Twang" though, your fiscal plan shouldn't count on the continuing support of its fans.

I'll add that rebroadcasting americana matinee, tangled roots and/or broadcasting twang on a weeknights after 8 or 9 would be good. so would adding a world music show. early morning bluegrass weekdays would be good to wake up to.
