KCY- Harrisonburg vs CYK - Statuton

1043/KCY H-Burg "Country KCY"
997/CYK Stauton/C-Ville "Country 997"

Both are Clear Channel
Both are Country
Both cover H-burg and both cover C-ville (1043 needs help w/ traslator at 1049)

Why do they have 2 country stations almost covering the same ground???

Which is better?

How does KCY do in C-ville and how does CYK do in H-burg?

Would it be smarter to combine the two and become "Country 997 CYK and 1043 KCY'
then they could get rid of wasted money on 1049....and not compete w/ each other.

Or am I confused and missing something here?
Edited by vaboi83 on 02/07/06 09:53 PM.

I certainly agree that it would be much smarter to combine the two, but IMO, Clear Channel is not always known for making the smartest moves.

I was wondering if anyone would ever bring this wacky situation up. WCYK is licensed to Staunton and is perhaps the most powerful FM in the region, broadcasting from the summit of the Blue Ridge near Afton. But you will virtually never hear of anyone in Staunton, Waynesboro, much less Harrisonburg, ever listening to this station. I looked at the latest rating for Harrisonburg and found WCYK got a .8 and would expect about the same for Staunton/Waynesboro if that was a rated market (more about that later). Country fans in S/W pretty strictly tune into WKCY. It seems kind of strange considering that WCYK probably has a better signal than KCY in S/W, and WCYK is a market leader in Charlottesville. Part of it lies in the fact that WCYK NEVER mentions a word about Staunton/Waynesboro or the rest of the valley, but WKCY serves Staunton/Waynesboro just as it does Harrisonburg. But I got to say, it seems strange to me that Staunton/Waynesboro is not part of the Harrisonburg market. I think you would find that the same stations WSVA/WKCY/WQPO/WACL/even Kiss, rule S/W the same way they do in Harrisonburg, with locals trailing behind and WCYK hardly showing up at all.
