I listened for about 30 minutes today and they're just playing Regional Mexican music with no commercials and only 1 liner + the ID at the top of the hour.

How are they making money?

I thought they were an ESPN deportes affiliate, but maybe they flipped to a music format. There isn't much to talk about in sports right now. There are a lot of stations and companies not making any money or losing money. Watch the news.

The ESPN Deportes network shut down last fall.

It is likely they made a deal with a programmer to cover the expenses of the station and the programmer has a couple of folks out trying to sell commercials at this point. The format will likely evolve. It's likely sort of like a station switching formats and going commercial free for some time before introducing air talent and commercials. Sure, liners would be a good deal and I suspect those will come in the next few weeks. It is likely they're just starting out and hoping to get some word of mouth going about this station that plays good tnes back to back without interruption. There certainly would be fewer competitors in the KC metro.

It may also be airing filler while trying to find a new operator or programmer. Way before Any Human's time in KC, KCTE 1510 acquired WHB 810 and LMA'ed 1510 to a Spanish-language broadcaster. I believe that operator now operates La X 1250 for Entercom. After that switch happened, 1510 ran commercial free modern rock while looking for a new operator. The top of the hour ID was about the only non-music element for the station.

I'm thinking it eventually picked up the daytime lineup from ESPN before eventually becoming the station that let you hear Channel 9 instead of just seeing it, but that was about 20 years ago, and my memory isn't quite what it used to be!

from allaccess.com:

And TBLC KANSAS CITY STATIONS, LLC has closed on the sale of Regional Mexican KDTD-A (LA GRANDE 1340 AM)/KANSAS CITY, KS and Spanish Sports KCZZ-A/MISSION, KS to REYES MEDIA GROUP, LLC for $600,000.

Thanks for the info... Looks like Reyes Media Group is the only operator of Spanish stations in the KC area, as 1250 AM is the only other Spanish station. Unless you count KCTO and it's translators which are the Spanish Radio Maria.
