KDF Making Changes

It's really quiet on the format change front on Second Ave. Silent. Blank
stares. Haven't seen or heard that in a while. Has the confidence
been shaken? Not sure, honestly. It may be just a glitch. The Zone seems
okay and upbeat. Rumors are just that, but silence, with z-e-r-o
denials is not normal. Hmm!

With the birthday bash coming up, how could they change formats?

I think it's just wishful thinking on some people's part because they miss the old Rock format so much!

The End is near!
What's that I hear ...is that Foghat, Ozzy, Pink Floyd all home on KDF? Maybe not just yet, but....soon
THE ROCK had better look out.

Plaster was telling everybody at a recent event that KDF is going back to its rock roots.

I dunno Bob. This time around (rumor #178,567) has some
credible legs in the sense (cents) that Citadel must now
make all the underperforming stations perform to help
prop up those recent little additions to the family. Now,
these stations may get the "big city" scrutiny they
should have had for the last five years. Citadel could
and should have been a better player.

Then again, every station has been rumored to change
formats...except Oldies 96...and more importantly
The Fan. So you may be on to something (or nothing.)

Few on this board would deny it wouldn't be cool if KDF rocked once again. And while I've long joined NSSB in singing choruses of "Ain't Happening" with an added bridge of "... Anytime Soon," faithful market watchers would have to admit there's been a bit of a spike on the ol' possibility meter on that one lately. And while this spike isn't enough to raise the odds much, it has been the largest spike in many, many months. So rule out today, cross off tomorrow, but maybe...

If you've seen the news stories with references to Cit possibly unloading some underperforming properties in smaller markets, don't think "Nashville." Knoxville's probably safe, maybe Chattanooga, but when you get into Tri-Cities... Not that they'd look there specifically, but that's what a smaller market is.

Citadel isn't ridding themselves of any stations, they are
refining and demanding more revenue and ratings. As for some
of the very small markets, they may have a different plan
in the near future.

rumor to bed

HELLO! RUMOR MONGERS!

Rock formats are d-e-a-d. They're better off staying country. The station they ought to deep-six is WGFX- not sure what they could do but they've got to be absolutely bleeding money keeping that turkey on-the-air.

Funny thing is Citadel has themselves in a bit of a format corner- they're one of 3 country FMs on KDF and GFX is one of two FM talkers. And, neither of their stations are leaders in their categories.

Re: rumor to bed

OK, I've said before that I don't work in radio, and never have, so feel free to flame me if I'm off base here, but:

The only dayparts that are costing GFX big money are the drive times, right? Those are the times that they are doing well in the ratings (from what I've read here), and those are the times when they seem to be selling ads like crazy. I don't imagine they're giving away those timeslots, and businesses are waiting in line to advertise during those shows. In fact, it seems that companies are dying to get Wycheck to pimp their stuff, which is surely not cheap.

Is that enough to pay the high salaries? That's what I don't know, limited as my knowledge is of how the business works. From what everyone has said here over the last couple of years, GFX is not doing a good job of branding with the rest of their day. I know that I listen to GFX about 90% of the time I listen to the radio, but I also realize I'm probably the exception. (I also like Rome, which puts me in the minority on this board).

Still, compared to what that station was doing three years ago, I think Citadel out to be thrilled with what they are getting. I don't think GFX is going to be changing anytime soon.

Re: rumor to bed

So how far off can you be? WGFX leads in their field! And in no way is it "bleeding money" you must be thinking about the Fan!

Leads in their field? If you count two low-power AMs in the mix, yes.
But as far as FM talk stations, WWTN beats them every book (25-54 adults).
Their operations (personalities) cost a ton, their rank in the market is
barely top 10 on a good day.

Re: rumor

I agree with OldiesCat, for once.

WGFX may lead in "their field", which is sports talk, but look at the competition: The Fan & WNSR, neither of which can be heard in half the market. But as for the "talk field", WGFX is in third place, behind two far-superior competitors.

As for the "bleeding money" accusation: I wouldn't say WGFX is bleeding money. Sure, they're paying Frank & George each more than five times the average radio personality's salary, and that's not even counting Kevin, Mark, Willy, Darren, and all the producers. But with what they're charging for ads in drive time and the frequency of the ads (the overbearing frequency), they're probably making it all back. Plus, we can't forget how they bend over to any paying customer on the weekends. I won't say they're "bleeding", but they're not raking it in, either.

Though, I still can't figure out what they're smoking to convince them that "the zone replay" is a good idea.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: rumor

Two low-power AM's? WNSR for sure but the other? WLAC? Bob you want in on this one?
As for personalities what does Phil and Steve make? Not chump change for sure!

WNSR's signal

Are you kidding me? 560 WNSR's daytime signal is almost as large as (or larger than) the 50kw AM signals in town. In fact they strech out much further than 1510 WLAC. WNSR's signal pattern is huge considering the amount of power they run.

rumor

No, not including WLAC. The other low-power is that garbage FM owned by Cumulus. Lousy signal, lousy product.
