KDFC: Next? 1260 KOIT AM?

The silence upon the fate of this station is deafining! So what is it going to be? What is to become of 1260 KOIT AM? Somebody knows, time to give it up already!

KDFC next? God I hope not! I am guessing 1260AM will be next.

1260AM can either be either Oldies, another news stations (Compete with KCBS), or a 24 hour Mandarin language format (Similar to the KAZN-AM in Los Angeles.... A little competition for Sing-tao Chinese radio and
USA Chinese Media). Anything BUT another talk or Spanish format

The last I heard 1260 was going to be Russian from 6:00 a.m. to Noon, Asian Noon to 6:00 p.m. and Oldies from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

I keep hearing the oldies rumor, but All News....hmm. I am wondering if it was executed well with a top notch staff, can a ALL News 1260 win over a 50,000 watt KCBS? If they don't rely heavily with a news service like CNN Headline News. How does KLIV-1590 compare to KCBS in terms of its content?

We are more used to comparing KCBS and KGO in regard to their news. KCBS is definitely more of a "newsey" sound and KGO is more of a "personality news sound" KGO does not want to sound like KCBS and KCBS does not want to sound like KGO. Neither station sounds like the other.

I have heard the CNN news on KLIV and it is very boring, boring and boring. However KLIV does sound good when their local anchors are on. I have never been a fan of CNN because it is so vanillia. Sometimes an affiliation with a local TV station to simulcast their 5:00 p.m. news can work for radio because it is local and different content from what your local news staff had on in the morning. CNN is just like USA Today. I prefer to read the national news from the San Francisco Chronicle or Sacramento Bee and get the regional viewpoint on national stories.

Your question on all news for 1260 Khz........, Bonneville did try all news in the first few years after it bought the station. Because of the strong hold of KGO/KCBS an all news station here could very well be a ticket to ship wreck.

Oh, the Russian/Asian/Oldies format was just a joke. Anybody else have a good joke for a new format on 1260 Khz?

I think you have to consider the invisible 800 lb gorilla in the room - KQED (NPR). I've heard it estimated that KQED would be in the top 3 in drive-time if Arbitron measured it. I think this severely shrinks the audience for commercial all-news radio. KCBS can do well because it's the only game in town outside of KGO in drive times. The huge LA market has had 2 commercial news stations for decades (KNX and KFWB), and their ratings are poor. But they probably bill well because of the size of that market. Also, CBS now owns both stations, so they sell both together to advertisers. I doubt 2 news radio stations would work in the Bay Area.

Arbitron measures all non-commercials, including KQED.

KQED is #5 in mornings and #3 in afternoons.
