KDGE 102.1 HD2 Changes Format

If you regularly listen to "The Cutting Edge" on 102.1 HD2, you may have to listen to the main "102.1 The Edge" station as Clear Channel has tweaked the format of KDGE-HD2 to a Classic Alternative playlist known as "Old School Edge".

The playlist includes (what I like to call) "back in the day" songs from Alice In Chains, R.E.M., Gin Blossoms, Goldfinger, Sister Hazel, The Cranberries, Pearl Jam, Camper Van Beethoven, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Radiohead, and many more. Though I never thought the Backstreet Boys, Sheryl Crow, and Edwin McCain would be on that station (At first, I thought they may have revived the old "Mix" format before I finally heard the new station IDs 5 songs in).

Aren't a lot of those "old school" bands already in somewhat heavy rotation on the main station, though? That's what kind of killed my love for the 90s alt bands.

I can still hear Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Radiohead, Green Day, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers etc. on 102.1 The Edge (HD-1)

I tuned to 102.1 KDGE-HD2 today while driving during lunch hour. Just dead air at 12:15PM. Or were they playing retro Marcel Marceau?

Which has sounded essentially the same for at least 10 years now. They'll mix in one or two "newer" artists to maintain their credibility now and then, only to pull them after about 6 months and put them on the shelf until they're ready to be labeled "old school". Meanwhile, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and so on will continue to get regular airplay. And I swear they signed some contract with the Toadies that requires them to be played at least 4x a day between 6a and 10p.

Same bands, but deeper cuts on 102.1-2 ? ? That would be listenable!

Playing now is Pearl Jam "Go"

But, I don't want to hear any Cheryl Crow -- She doesn't ring true with this one. ;D

Neither does Paula Cole or the Backstreet Boys. Does make me wonder who programs Clear Channel's HD stations?
