KDGE plays Metallica again...KEGL to flip once more?

I was stumped, maybe even shocked, when Clear Channel revived The Eagle after Spanish-language and AC formats failed on the 97.1 signal.

Rarely does a radio corporation ever resurrect a failed format. KEGL, even with its legendary history, was pulling mediocre-to-terrible numbers that warranted a flip.

The re-incarnated version sounds a lot like the one that signed off in the early 2000s—lots of album rock staples, Zepp and other classics with some harder-edged stuff thrown in the mix. It’s certainly listenable, but I would not call it cutting-edge radio or a grade-A product.

That introduction leads to the point of this supposition. I happened to visit the D-FW area this weekend and also happened to have KDGE on early this morning. The Edge played “Enter Sandman.”

While the mega-popular tune doesn’t represent the band’s heaviest sound, Metallica is one of the artists I figured CC had relegated to the “new” Eagle. The Edge was playing the group in those interim years when it was the Metroplex’s lone rocker (non classic, I mean). Don’t get me started on The Bone. Ugh.

KDGE, for the most part, sounds no different than it has since KEGL’s return. The station hasn’t stopped jamming Rage Against the Machine, Marilyn Manson or Linkin Park.

I also heard Stone Sour’s “Say You’ll Haunt Me” and a pair of Tool tunes. Does that portend activity on the horizon, or is it a meaningless coincidence or oversight?

It really makes no sense for one radio company to own two rock stations that play Metallica. Am I just stupid, or am I on to something?

I gather from reading this board that another Eagle flip wouldn’t cause quite as much anguish as the first one did. I also figure that CC might not have an obvious superior option at this point.

Thoughts?

Flip that bad boy to "97.1 Hallelujah FM"! Put some Jesus into that frequency....

Live 97.1, "The Talk That Rocks Texas"

Leykus has a webcast of the "Tom Leykus Show" and "The Tasting Room" along with Deans show(his producer) and several others. No reason CC couldnt pick up the leykus show off webcast and have that fall after Martin afternoons with Sterns epic return to terristrial. Will any of this happen? Seriously doubt it. One can dream though.

The Eagle has a 12+ cume of +/- 800,000 weekly listeners. 105.3 did not have that, plus the heavy payrolls of talk talent vs free music and $25 an hour voicetrackers.

Programming against Russ Martin is insignificant in DFW PD roundtable decisions, he is not a factor. My guess is KEGL will have Russ start playing 4-5 songs an hour coming into the next 1/4.

They always play Metallica on the weekend until 6am, but not during the week.

Um...Metallica is about to hit it's 30 year mark in the coming years. Lots of classic rock stations are playing Enter Sandman.

Why are you complaining? Do you really want it to flip back to Spanish? I'm sure your city doesn't need one more of those.

I am hardly complaining. I consider myself a die-hard Metallica supporter and aficionado.

I was not aware KDGE had been playing the band at all since KEGL re-appeared. It struck me as odd, and I posed the question in this forum.

Why share that artist between alternative outlet The Edge and half-mainstream, half-active outlet The Eagle?

Houston's KTBZ started playing Metallica in the early 2000s, back when legendary, defunct rocker KLOL still owned most of the group's listenership. Then, after a few years, PD Vince Richards nixed that idea and management decided to relegate the band to KLOL.

When Rock 101 died, The Buzz reclaimed the outfit (and, if I may say so, the station hosts the best Mandatory Metallica I have heard on any frequency).

Consider this. Clear Channel has pre-packaged cookie cutter formats in the form of Premium Choice. Perhaps the weekend overnights aren't even programmed in Dallas but are in fact these PC logs which do include more Active Rock artists like Tool and Metallica. I know when it was first introduced stations were encouraged to take Premium Choice in non-prime dayparts.

It would be interesting to compare the weekend playlist from KDGE and the alternative Premium Choice playlist of the same time period. I wonder if they would match?

Then I'm really confused. What format, exactly, is KEGL? Active, alternative? Metallic is played on all three rock formats. How does adding Metallica indicate a format switch? It's not like CHR or AC has picked up the band.

THAT would make the most sense out of just about anything... GREAT format.

Apparently, Casey (if that is your real name), you missed the "Free-FM" years.

Why is KEGL playing Cake on here? They played "The Distance" earlier this morning.
