First of all I am "just
" a layman and I am not an engineer nor do I have access to a field strenghth indicator; I can only go by what my radio and my ears tell me. That being said does anyone know what in the heck is going on with KDGL's signal? Background: Years ago the station had a very nice signal throughout the eastern high desert (when the calls were KYOR) and through the Banning Pass. Morris Communication decided to build KDGL-1 in the Coachella Valley for the Palms Springs area (KDGL's studio is also located there). Once KDGL-1 went on the air the signal (especially in the Banning Pass area) became garbled since both transmitters were overlapping the same area. All of a sudden the Pass area became very clear and it seemed apparent to me why; the signal from the main transmitter went down-way down. You couldn't even recieve a clear signal within the service boundaries listed on the FCC site. To me, it seems, in order to get a clear signal 'down the hill' it was at the expense of its licensed coverage area. I called numerous times and was told nothing was wrong with the Yucca transmitter.
Flash forward to the last couple of days; a big storm blew thru and the Yucca transmitter went off (again) due to down power lines. Since the signal in PS is weaker and the tower is 3000ft lower than Yucca KDGL-1 doesn't get up here so no station. Yesterday KDGL went back on and it was back to where it was 3 years ago; blasting a signal. In fact in the Banning Pass area (at least for yesterday) the Yucca signal was stronger and wiped out the PS repeater (KDGL has no RDS, KDGL-1 does-curious again since that is the 'repeater'-so it is easy to see what signal you are receiving). So my question is: Is this just the work of an incompetant engineer or is MCC purposly adjusting the signal contours so the higher (and more affluent I might add) population in the Palm Springs market can have the better signal? I see no changes for KDGL on the FCC site that can explain the changes in the Yucca Valley area.
Thanks and this is a great site!
