KDGO & KENN To Begin Simulcasting

Hutton Broadcasting will combine its two Four Corners region Conservative Talk stations into a simulcast starting on Monday, September 1.

This will probably not be well received in Durango, less so for the politics and more for a local preference toward Colorado-based media rather than media based in New Mexico. In any event, conservative talk, which probably has potential in Farmington, is not as likely to do well in Durango.

Hutton, the owner of the stations, is based in Santa Fe, NM.
 
I'm not so sure. Conservative Talk should do quite well. The liberal activist will tune in to get word out on what conservatives are up to. I have to ponder the number of Rush listeners that hated him but hung on his every word.

In Farmington, yes, or at least as much as New Mexico can be. In Durango, I have my doubts.

I think these days people are listening for reinforcement and not for exposure to other ideas. This seems to be true for most political affiliations. That's how polarized things have gotten.

I have stayed in Durango several times during ski trips to Purgatory. I can vouch that Durango is a very liberal town. Maybe the ranchers outside of town are conservative, but not in Durango itself. Also, when KDGO first began aitring Rush, there were a lot of angry listeners and public outcry. Rush would gleefully talk about it on air, stirring up a hornet's nest of liberals to go to battle with
 
The radio Insight article has the following:

The company stated that the “collaboration aims to provide more comprehensive and localized coverage to listeners in both communities”.

How is combining 2 stations into a simulcast supposed to reach that goal? I think we know the real reason behind this ...cutting costs.
 
A couple of interesting things here:

1) Both of these stations have had very similar program schedules (though I believe under separate owners) for many years now so the simulcasting does make some sense.

2) That said, if memory serves, Hutton Broadcasting does (or did) have a liberal talker in Santa Fe, NM, (either 1260 or 1400--I can't remember which one right now). If that format is still in place in Santa Fe, maybe that should have been the simulcast partner for the Durango station, given the political demographics of the community..

The station at 1260 is the talk station; 1400 is ESPN. KTRC is at 1260; KVSF is at 1400. Some time ago, they swapped calls. The 1260 frequency was the original home of what's now KNML in Albuquerque at 610. When what was then KGGM moved from 1260 to 610, Anton Hebenstreit managed to put 1260 in Santa Fe, somehow without running afoul of overlap rules.

Hutton has already replicated the Radio Free Santa Fe format of KBAC in Durango:

I haven't been to Durango or Santa Fe this year; maybe next year (both have direct flights to and from Denver). Too many other places to go right now.
