KDKA #1 IN JANUARY BOOK

Up a full point over last month....

So DVE is #2, right? Nope.... that would be 3WS... then BOB-FM.... then DVE.

Kiss is next, followed by Y108 and Q92.9 (really?).....

Then it's 104.7 (now with just over half of KD's number), Star, the Fan (up month) and the X, which only had a few days of hockey in this ratings period.

Not a happy day on Fleet Street...

And of course we can't see WSHH, K-Love (which has a growing audience), the Frogs and WJAS as they are non-subscribers.

So much for the (valid) criticisms of 3WS on this board recently. DVE hasn't been out of the top 3 in probably 25 years. Any idea where Wish would be if they were listed?

I was very surprised at KDKA's jump back to the top. At one point under PD Marshall Adams, they had dropped to almost 10th.

DVE could very well be a stale music problem, and your right the morning show just isn't the same.

So what is KDKA-AM doing right lately? They've made quite a turnaround. I don't get a chance to listen very often.

Kind of amazing that they thought the cure for a stale morning show would be Scott Paulsen.

I think there's one programming exec that drives the Paulsen connection.

Given that most of their gains seem to have come from the conservative talk on 104.7, I think the difference is local news and local content. 104.7 is is 24/7 Obama bashing with guys from Cleveland butchering the news.

"I don't know how Nixon could have won. I don't know anybody
who voted for him." Pauline Kael, NY Times

Since WSHH does not subscribe to the ratings, and therefore is not listed, I think it is entirely possible
that WDVE is in fifth place, rather than fourth. The overall 6+ is a vanity number, of course, but they
can't be too pleased.

I would say the terrible weather that we've had in January probably has helped KDKA-AM's numbers. There is just no where else to turn locally for local news, weather, school closings and traffic.

As for DVE, the Steelers not making the playoffs I'm sure was a factor in their drop. I have to say that the few times that I've listened to the DVE morning show it's been terrible. As much as people on this board love to bash Krenn, he was very likable and very familiar and they have not been able to replace him. The times I've listened, Prisuta was talking almost as much as Randy--and who wants to hear that in the morning?

Either you are right or the wave of the future in programming is investment advisors, veterinarians,
gardeners, realtors, chiropractors, Catholic Priests and Tradio.

The local TV stations cover that stuff obsessively on their morning news. A lot of school districts have direct alerts set up for parents. School closings aren't the factor for radio that they were 30 years ago.

I think it has a lot more to do with the conservative talk format losing a lot of listeners after the election. Fox News ratings on TV have also seen a significant decrease.

Ah, but that's only on the weekends. On KHB, it's polkas.

I do think conservative talk is finally hitting a speed bump, as though Obama's re-election signified a
change in the mood of the country, and maybe it did.

That may be true, but many Moms don't have a TV on the kitchen table, or in the car for traffic reports. Since I don't live there I have no idea how severe the weather has been, but you can count on a non-volatile format like KDKA's to show this kind of spike thanks only to some very large outside influence. (Absent other explanations, I'd guess weather.)

Now it may also be true that the rest of the programming has improved (I wouldn't know) and that a cume generator like "snow" is also translating into more time-spent with more interesting or perhaps provocative programming. Or, obviously, it could be the collapse of a direct competitor or the move of one popular program from a competitor to 1020. But given that it's "January" and others have mentioned weather, that would be my first guess for "most likely".
