KDKA 1020 Changes

Well O'Reilly is supposed to move to 10pm Monday along with the new noon news block and Kramer at 1pm. Any word who will be the perminant 6-10pm host, hosts or hosteses?

Does it really matter? Whoever KDKA puts on the air, the old people who have their radio tuners welded to 1020 will keep on listening, and everyone else has abandoned that station a long time ago.

I'll be listening to KDKA 1020

I can remember in 2003 there were a series of bad storms coming thru Pgh on a sunday night. As I was headed towards downtown from mcknight road. Chris Moore had the information on the storm I was headed into and kept updating it. All of these other stations had nothing on. just playing the satellite or more music more often. So my amplitude modulation monitor is not welded to 1020. But they offer information when i need it...The night of the September Storm 104.7 host ellis cannon was talking about his 5 year old child dressing in wedding cloths as a class project. Now that's information..while the traffic was backed up and rain and flooding every where. meanwhile KD and KQV were informing the public.
more than just grandparents listen to these stations.

Sorry I left out the disclaimer

I was referring to the vast majority of KDKA listeners most of the time, not the exceptional handful of people who tune into KDKA on those rare times when they are out & about and an unexpected bit of severe weather kicks up. I must confess that on two or three days out of 365, KDKA might do a better job at covering emergency situations. But, if that's the case, it STILL won't matter who they schedule on the air from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. As long as there isn't a sudden storm or other such rare event, KDKA can count on MOSTLY senior citizens listening because they can't figure out how to tune their radios to any other stations. There will be a handful of exceptions.

Historical note on the importance of information on KDKA

I seem to remember in the late 80s- probably about 1986 or 1987- there was a disaster that hit Pittsburgh. Forgive me for not recalling the details- it's been 20 years- but there was some sort of flood, snow, or invasion from Mars that made life around here difficult and unsafe for many people.

I think as a result many people in the South Hills could not get running water for months in their homes.

At the time Doug Hoerth was on the air, and let's just say that he IGNORED this event- wishing to talk about music with guests he'd lined up.

It was a fun show- I remember I learned a lot about oldies from it. But the fact of the matter is people were in danger and he ignored them.

People in droves called up KDKA to complain. Remember, there's no internet or 24-hour local news station back then- radio is the only immediate news source in the late 80s.

Hoerth was unwisely defiant about it, even defending his position to stick with talking about doo-wop and such the next week.

He was let go soon afterwards, perhaps not as a direct result, but you can't tell me it wasn't a factor.

Had Hoerth just rescheduled the show and cared a bit more about his fellow man's safety- who's to say the entire direction of both host and station wouldn't have been vastly different?

Re: Historical note on the importance of information on KDKA

You left out the story of how KDKA reported the Warren G. Harding election returns. Or their outstanding coverage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the assasination of President John F. Kennedy.

What I want to know is what KDKA has done for listeners recently.

Re: Historical note on the importance of information on KDKA

If management wanted him to shift gears, especially in the days of Westinghouse ownership, it would have been done with a single phone call from the GM or PD. The fact they didn't meant his decision had management's endorsement.

Hoerth was canned by KDKA because the nighttime ratings were faltering and some genius thought they would be cured by hiring bigmouth City Council woman Michele Madoff to host a show. She bombed, they had to bring Pintek in to co-host because she had no radio skills, and that led to Pintek getting his own show.

Re: I'll be listening to KDKA 1020

The night the Steelers won the Super Bowl, I turned to KDKA here in Columbus, Ohio to hear some local Pittsburgh commentary, call-ins, etc.; basically some local flavor. They were running what appeared to be a brokered religious program. I know KDKA does not carry the Steelers and there is another sports station over there, but that gave me a very negative impression of a major news station in a major market.
Please correct me if I'm wrong about the station, as I usually can't hear KDKA at all during the day and very poorly at night.

But not any more.

As O'Brien and Gary often said, "Used to be, but not any more". KDKA used to be a station one could turn to for late-breaking news. But not any more. KDKA is rapidly becoming WEDO with a stronger signal.

I hadn't thought about that. Then again, when is KDKA going to start running ethnic shows (ala WEDO), old-time radio (ala KQV) and informercials (ala KQV or WPGB on weekends)?

That, regrettably, furthers the fallacy of the 50,000-watt blowtorch, as Clear Channel has proven with the quiet closing of Jamboree USA over WWVA.

But what do I know?

Beats me. I don't think that turning into WEDO is something that someone at KDKA made a deliberate decision to do. It's just turning out that way.

.....except that wouldn't be fair to WEDO!
