KDKA HD

First off, I'll admit that I have not listened to KDKA for a long time as virtually none of their current
program lineup interests me. I have probably not tuned in regularly since the Pirates went to FM.

This past weekend however I did tune in because they were the only station offering breaking news
coverage of the police shooting tragedy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the IBOC buzz was gone!
If I heard correctly over the station breaks, KDKA in HD is now being offered on the HD3 channel of several
FM sister stations? If so, that is a great solution for getting the AM station some HD coverage. IBOC on AM
just does not work. (I really wish WEAE would dump it, as I live so close to their tower it chews up a big
chunk of my dial).

I agree. HD radio on AM is terrible. It's not worth the interference problems it causes.

yep, checked out KD this weekend and the buzz was back. Must have caught them in downtime. Why you would voluntarily destroy your audio quality for the 96% of your listners who are analog is beyond me.

That would explain why I was suddenly able to hear them in Cleveland for a while. Sad, considering the reach the station once had.

A station on an adjacent channel would block them from getting into cleveland, not them running HD on their signal.

It isn't blocked, it's just lost in all of the HD fuzz.

Its as much other stations around them broadcasting in HD as it is them. WBZ, WINZ and KYW just kill them with all of the side channel splatter. DXing AM signals is over as we know it, and before too much longer so will the AM band.
