KDKA

Looks like KDKA is headed for the tank. They just let Gary Dickson go. Budget problems or something. Wonder what syndicated show will take his place?

hmmmm.....not good.....

if memory serves he was of the old merkel and dickson on 3WS..??????????????

was he in fact getting them ratings ?????????????

You hate to hear anyone has lost their job, but didn't you feel there was just something missing with Dickson?

Then again, wouldn't it have made more sense to move Dickson up to the 7 p.m. hour, go to 12, and then have Boortz and O'Reilly on in the middle of the night?

Could a new host come in and fill the 7-12 role with the syndicated shows going overnight?

Or, could the overnight be a possible location for Doug Hoerth?

Ratings aren't the issue overnight that they are during the day. The issue is whether you can sell it, which Bob Logue always did. His show stayed on the air because he brought in enough business to keep the time slot profitable. Bob's background was in small town radio and he knew how to hustle to get clients.

I haven't heard Dickson's show in a long time, so I don't know if he was able to maintain Bob's business. When Dickson first took over, he was under orders to keep the show the way Bob did it -- absolute patience with older callers, lots of courtesy and kindness, lots of deference. A lot of the advertisers stayed because Bob was still voicing their spots.

If they've cut Dickson loose, I assume they weren't turning a profit overnight any more and will then put in another syndicated show.

Looks like the overnights are going to be split between Dennis Miller and the Midnight Truckers Radio Network
(or whatever they are calling it these days). Looks like they are also going to give John Steigerwald and
Scott Paulsen a test run in the evenings, which is at least a step back from the edge of the grave.
Wonder if Dennis will wax nostalgic when he gets his first 2AM call from Ethel in Crafton to complain about
her lumbago? Why oh WHY is the Federal Government coming after my 60 watt incandescent light bulbs,
while at the same time allowing this to go on?

I think Steigy and Paulsen have a lot of potential. There's a real conservative-liberal pairing there, and by that I don't necessarily mean politics.

But they both have minds and know Pittsburgh through and through and are true professionals.

The criticism of Steigerwald is that he's too grumpy. Paulsen is a very positive thinker.

And the criticism of Paulsen is that he can be a bit out there at times. Steigy can reel him back in.

This could be very good. I will be listening!

I also will say I really wish KDKA would do something more with the Miller show. I think it's very good.

I'd much rather listen to him than Glenn Beck, for instance.

The odd thing in the P-G article announcing Paulsen and Steigy is that it said they will be on from 7-10PM through March. That's about six weeks. Then what?

A different time slot? They're gone because their contracts with 93.7 are up? They get to stay if they renegotiate lower salaries? What?

It's not like nights will be taken over by baseball.....

Several reasons:

A) They can't compete with baseball and they know it.
B) That is when the other shoe drops in the CBS/Westwood One deal drops and they just might find themselves having to clear a spot for a syndicated show.
C) They aren't going to wait an entire year to realize the show has zero potential.

Snaf- I don't think I'd write this show off.

I think it has potential. Now, I don't want to get into an arguement, but I'm curious as to your reasoning why the show does not.

Both of these guys are used to being the lead dog and now they have to share the harness. If you heard their first attempt it had less than no chemistry. It was as if Steigy was just going through the motions and Scott had left all of the creative genius back in his home studio.

Notice that Scott took his website down again.

This show will fail because Steigerwald needs to be retired and Paulsen needs to constrain his long and boring bits. Get to the point Scott.

What could be a great bit of Scott's is usually watered down with his never ending long and boring stories.

I heard them on one of their Saturday ventures and no they don't have chemistry. No, I won't give them time to develop it either. Steigerwald is one of the most bland and angry "personalities" out there. They other one is his brother Paul.

They were filling time between records, not doing a talk show.

Freddy-

Take note of what Boss said. There's a difference with Paulsen & Steigerwald and Quinn & Banana. Q&B had more chemistry on a bad day than P&S on a good day, albeit they haven't had any long significance together.

Not only was it a different format, but it was a different day. Back in the heyday of Q&B, radio was fun with great imaging to propel them.
