Now that the dust is settling (it will settle when KDKB gets a morning show) on the "new" KDKB, some thoughts:
KDKB appears to be heading to a slightly harder mix. They're not in KUPD territory, but KDKB seems a bit edgier. They're breaking no new ground, of course, but maybe they're a little more focused.
KSLX, on the other hand, seems to have softened just a bit. I could be wrong, but I hear more things like Van Morrison's "Moondance" and "Lyin' Eyes" - type material on KSLX. Those songs probably won't get on KDKB.
Interestingly, both stations have a daily block of Led Zeppelin - never a bad thing. KDKB rolls with it at 6 PM and KSLX turns around with "deep" Led Zep tracks at 7 PM. I kinda like Zep, so I listen. In fact, last night KDKB played a track off "Presence" and Doc Ellis explained the song was about Robert Plant's frustrations with Jimmy Page and manager Peter Grant. Sure enough, KSLX played the exact same song at the end of its block an hour later and the jock read the very same explanation. (None of the other songs were duplicated on either station that night.)
I understand both stations are owned by the same company, but are they programed by the same person? In any case, Sandusky may actually have a strategy here, which, I know, is hard to believe. Maybe this is it:
KUPD: You stop listening by the time you're 29... But you still want to rock so you head over to...
KDKB, where you hear some of the stuff you liked when you were 16 along with the stuff your dad liked when he was 16. Once you hit 40, you realize that Warrant kinda sucked, so you move on to....
KSLX, where they can still kick it, but they realize you may want to lower your blood pressure with a helping of the aforementioned "Moondance."
Discuss.
