KDKR's Irving Translator

91.3 KDKR’s Irving translator (K221FM) made the switch over the weekend from 92.1 (250 watts) to its new CP at 99.9 (53 watts). Given that the antenna height remains at 250 feet, this does not mean a noticeable reduction in coverage area.

92.1: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=K221FM&service=FX&status=L&hours=U
99.9: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=K221FM&service=FX&status=C&hours=U

The move also means reduced interference for KTFW/Glen Rose and KXEZ/Farmersville in the areas outside of their protected service contours nearest Irving.

KDKR’s other Dallas County translator remains on 97.5.

We were driving in Plano tonight, near The Shops at Legacy and tuned to 99.9. I must say, for 53 watts (or now they have a CP for 250) they have a HELL of a signal up there. Looks like from the maps they're on that tower on NW Hwy near Luna that floods sometimes. I guess their 97.5 translator is 30@Cockrell Hill. Somehow I'm doubting two things: that they're only putting out 53 watts, and that their 60dbu contour isn't bigger than they claim it is. Even going under overpasses we got very little multipath and no dropouts of any kind.

Here's their 60dbu contour of their main station: here
Here's the 60dbu of the Irving translator http://maps.google.com/?q=http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/contourplot.kml?gmap=2%26appid=1422875%26call=K260BP%26freq=99.9%26contour=60%26city=IRVING%26state=TX"]Irving xlator
And last but not least: http://maps.google.com/?q=http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/contourplot.kml?gmap=2%26appid=1389957%26call=K248BC%26freq=97.5%26contour=60%26city=DALLAS%26state=TX"]Cockrell Hill

Since the 60dbu contours are obviously outside the main station's contour, they would be considered "non fill in translators" as opposed to "fill in translators". I wonder if they both receive the main station off air. And if they both go off air when the main station does.

Maybe they're testing with the 250 watts. After all, that's what they had on the other frequency and the current CP didn't involve any change except the ERP. But I'd agree about the signal, regardless of what power they're running; last time I checked it seemed a little too good in Richardson, too.

FWIW, a check of some V-Soft plotting from when they were on 92.1 doesn't indicate anything above 50dBu in that area of Plano. In the vicinity of Addison Airport it showed a level of around 58dBu, but that's about 10 miles to the south of where you were, and considerably closer to the Northwest Highway tower.

I complained vociferously to the FCC and to KTFW about the interference...what would be even better is if the FCC would stop allowing such blatant interference in the first place.

Sometimes those low power transmitters get out quite well. I was recently in the Hill Country near Austin, and made a point of listening to KDRP in Dripping Springs while driving along 290. With only 5 watts, the station got out almost 15 miles both directions before completely fading out.

??? Normally a Christian station would not have a signal from hell :D
