KDM 7000, V-103 did exactly it like I said it would...adding crossover again

V-103 has started to lean 'rhythmic' again for the summer months' PPMs. At 5:15am this morning, they decided to spin Katy Perry's hit song "E.T. ft. Kanye West" just to mess with Wild & Q100. Mainly to pull some white females from the other stations. :D

Since 2008, V-103 have seem to chosen start pulling some of the crossover audience for the winter and summer months' PPM to boost their ratings. As I already told you, their mixes @ 5PM and some weekend mixes are mimicking a crossover station like their sister stations WPGC & WZMX.

I'm wondering what other crossover hits will see their spins in the coming summer months on V that will make everyone from Hot to Q100 look at them with spite because their attempt to steal some of their audience. Maybe Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" AND/OR Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor"?, LOL

Adele has crossed over to the Billboard R&B Chart. It it something like #96. But it
won't go higher than 85 in my opinion. Interesting that some R&B stations are
expanding their playlists at the same time fewer Hip-Hop acts are crossing over to
Pop radio.

I don't think the next PPMs are going to be very kind to Pop stations that rely heavily
on Hip-Hop crossover. The current pickins are quite slim.

Well, that's still pretty low for V to even want to spin "Rolling in the Deep" other than during the mixes. I know that "E.T." is now seeing regular spins on V-103 as well.

As June 6th, Kathy Brown has been named APD/MD of WVEE, whom used to be the OM of the Washington DC cluster of Radio One. The APD/MD spot has been vacate since 2008 with Reggie Rouse handling everything.

I noticed they played "Rolling in the deep" about a week ago during the 5 o clock mix. Never knew it was officially in rotation, though. Hopefully they continue doing "odd" and unique things after the summer since I wont be there until September. How well is V103 doing with pulling in hispanic listeners? I wonder if Katy Perry's "ET" will be the "Like a G6" of the summer? I heard that another urban also picked up "ET" some time ago..

V-103 doesn't seem to touch base with most Hispanics, but they do seem to make an effort with the Afro-Latinos like Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc. with Reggaeton in the mix. Also black-owned, full-service, urban contemporary, KPRS/Kansas City "Hot 103 Jamz" also gives "E.T." by Katy Perry major spins. They also tend to lean rhythmic during certain times of the year to compete with their market's CHR station. I think it will be like "Like A G6" with middle-range spins. Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is getting major spins on V's sister stations WZMX & WPGC as well.

Oh yeah, they just added both songs this week. Also I have a feeling that Jennifer Lopez's song might be added as well to the regular rotation before the summer is out.

If it were not for Kanye West's rap, "E.T." wouldn't get the time of day of urban. But this reminds of about ten years ago when some urban stations spun Britney Spears' "I'm A Slave 4 U".

Yeah I was in Kansas City when KPRS played that Britney song. Mainly due to Pharrell Williams producing it. The song had a good respond to KPRS listeners. Also 'NSync's Gone and Girlfriend. Of course the first thing came to mind was I listening to KPRS or the CHR stations KCHZ or KMXV?

I think Pitbull "hey baby" sounds more "street" than J-Lo "on the floor", although I'm not complaining. I'd be surprised if "on the floor" works more than "only girl in the world", which was a huge, very well known hit by a very steadily established artist who never disappeared for a while.. Between "Party rick anthem" and "on the floor", not sure which one would be better - if urban was forced to pick one. In other words, I'd be surprised if J-lo "on the floor" makes it, and even though I'm not complaining about it, I think there are other rhythmic dance songs that could be given a chance.

I always wondered why the Uptempo Remix of "Birthday Sex" by Jeremih was never given a chance on Urbans? After all, Ghost town Dj's and Quad City Dj's were... and even Heavy D "now that we found love" was at one point.

Well, there are some exceptional pop charting songs that will get spins on the liberally programmed urban stations (usually the ones that actually sound like something other the same-old) every few years. Back in the 1980s it was the songs by George Michael, Madonna, New Kids on the Block, etc.; in the 1990s, it was the New Kids on the Block, NSYNC, Britney Spears; in the 2000s, it was Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas, OneRepublic. Now it's Katy Perry.

I remember "The Beat" playing Nsync's Gone & Girlfriend in heavy rotation in 2001-02. BTW Remember Remy Shand's Take A Message from 2002? I forgot about that song until I came across a billboard article from March 2002. According the article Remy Shand's Take A Message earned a greater gainer nod at the Urban AC charts and became a top 10 hit on KJLH during the week of March 30, 2002.

Ghost Town DJ's My Boo had a great deal of spins on 92.3 The Beat, Power 106 and KGGI in Los Angeles in 1996-97 and so Quad City DJ's C'mon & Ride it(The Train) in 1995-96. Those are my favorite songs, those songs sound way more street than LMFAO party rock anthem and Pitbull hey baby.

Actually The Black Eyed Peas were around since 1998. Remember Joints & Jams? 92.3 The Beat, Power 106 and KGGI gave it some great spins in 1998. Wham's Careless Whisper gets alot of spins as a recurrent on Urban AC's such KJLH. Nothing New folks.

BJordan, I've been a fan of BEPs since they did that song with Macy Gray called "Request + Line". Yeah, BEPs have been around since the late 1990s, but they weren't considered relevant to this conversation until 2003 when Fergie joined the group and they went more pop.

Looks as if ET flopped big time on V103. It disappeared way faster than Ciara's "Gimme dat". I notice "super bass" by Nicki Minaj seems to "come and go", if that makes sense...

Yeah, it is interesting to see how "E.T." did bounce right back off the playlist. Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is still getting at least 2-3 spins per week, but "Super Bass" is here and there indeed. I feel they are testing how well certain crossover songs are going but sticking to the core artists that are charting well on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop panel. It's funny to see them doing this instead of giving them power plays.

I remember "Request+Line" featuring Macy Gray from 2001 that was their last hip hop song. They went more pop after they dropped the "Elephunk" album in the summer of 2003.

Exactly Katy Perry's ET doesn't belong on a urban station and neither does Adele. Power 106 in L.A. is getting it together though. IMHO it doesn't make sense to play Katy Perry in rotation with Keyshia Cole's Take Me Away, Big Sean's My Last and Chris Brown's Look At Me
Now
Yikes . WVEE V-103 need to get their Shhh together. Pardon my french y'all. They daypart the station well. During the Urban AC esque programing nothing but R&B. After 6 Hip Hop & R&B and evening is their quiet storm which I love. I love their song selection during the slow jam show I.E. Kem's Love Calls, Jaheim's Anything, Jesse Powell's You, Joe's All The Things and Jon B.'s I Do(Whatcha Say Boo) Those are some beautiful songs.

BTW Katy Perry's ET has flopped big time on Power 106 in Los Angeles. That's a good thing because Power 106 represents hip hop not mainstream pop.

Adele is more of a blue-eyed soul artist than pop, so I don't see a problem with them spinning her songs. Also V-103 have a long track history of adding crossover records to their playlist going all the way back to the late 1990s.
