Severe storms here in Gila county have caused major outages. Much has to do with the defective 35 year old APS powerline that feeds Pinal miuntain. The USFS has refused to allow APS to replace the line after serveal years of study and an alternate route that follows the road requiring no undisturbed land impact. The USFS is even questioning whether the line should be replaced at all with a really stupid question "what if it isn't replaced -- what would be the impact of no power supply"? Seems all they are worried about the Mexican Spotted Owl more that the users. Our station is now contemplating our first annual Spotted Owl roast for this fall -- hear they taste like chicken --- Yum !!!
Seriously 5 broadcasters, multiple public service operations and dozens of two-way systems are effected as well as 2 major FAA sites. There is no sense of urgency in solving the problem. Expect Ted, KRDE and others to be effected for some time to come.
They must have been running about 1 watt at most, and with really distorted audio, but they were on the air running Sporting News Radio.
Their range was from about Ray to Broadway Rds. (3 miles in each direction from their towers at Guadalupe & I-10) as I was driving north on 48th St. They were gone by the time I got to University & AZ 143.

The effect of 'no power' on a site like this would be disastrous, of course. Perhaps it's time to remind the Forest Service that diesel generators going 24/7 on their pristine mountaintop is a far worse idea. You've just gotta wonder about them sometimes.
