They are VERY close.

Testing went very well and the license has has been approved. It's waiting for final approval from the University and then it signs on from the new tower.

You should see considerable improvement into Sacramento.

oh don't give them any idea's, however CPR does need a market signal for full time classical or jazz, I just thought about this - Put there existing signal on a KXPR 90.9 HD-2 channel and then use CPR's 99.7 Translator in Davis for the broadcast signal - You get a Classical or Jazz Full time again in Sacramento

Thought it might have been tonight. The "Settin' the woods on fire" show was in mono. I doubt if I'll be able to tell up here in Grass Valley. It's already pretty much full strength on all of the radios. But I'll let you know.

Good point Bud, but I'd find a better translator than the Davis 99.7. Remember, K-LOVE is at 99.5.

KDVS has always been strong in the foothills. Even when they were only 5,000 Watts. There lousy on the Valley floor more than 15 miles outside of town due to the low HAAT, but their higher ERP booms in at the higher elevations.

You may notice an upgrade in the audio as well. Feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Definately an improvement in signal and audio. The levels are much higher than before, on par with the commercial stations. Sounds very clean with a good amount of low end. I am assuming much of the audio chain is brand new? Are they using a microwave STL?

I compared 90.3 with 101.5 several times driving in the foothills along US 50 - signals are similiar with 90.3 having a slight edge in reception, presumably the higher ERP.

I'm assuming the directional pattern aimed at NW is to protect 90.1 Stockton and the local booster?

The air chain had a considerable upgrade. The modulation and processing is on par with commercial stations, thanks for noticing.

They're now using an Optimod 5500, a pretty slick 5 band processor. The processing is set to pretty open to allow for the diverse programming content.

The STL is currently a high bit rate Internet stream. It's a temporary solution until the permanent solution is in place which will also be IP based. Unfortunately, they did not approve a MW based STL.

Most of the work was done by local engineer Tim Parish. Great guy and a blast to work with. I was only responsible for the STL, the IP network in the transmitter building, some remote control and the audio chain at the transmitter. There's an interesting keep alive set of scripts that run at the site to recover should they have a failure on either end. It will be interesting to see how resilient it is.

Close as I can tell it's about 4 db hotter in Grass Valley / Nevada City. This according to the dbm readout in my Tecsun PL-380, and about what I would expect. The interesting thing is that there's a significant improvement driving around various parts of the foothills. I thought it was pretty good before, but there are areas where some minor picket-fencing used to occur - like downtown Grass Valley. Those areas are now pretty much static-free.

I haven't driven out to Chicago Park or Colfax yet but that used to be really bad. It'll be interesting to see how it does there.

It seems basically the same in Elk Grove. On the Sony home hd tuner 3 out of 3 signal strength bars (same as before) In the car driving aaround locally it still breaks up here and there. Cannot be recieved at all on a Walkman.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. We've had a few STL snags but we've got a permanent solution coming online soon.

Losing that studio is sad for KDVS. Lots of history in that building and their vinyl collection is incredible, which may still be an understatement.
