KDWN Credibility

I had written a post the other day asking about credibility of news stations (specifically KDWN's use of the term "exclusive" and "top rated", with an answer of essetially, "everyone does it".

Now today, I read in the paper about Glenn Lerner not showing up for a murder trial he was suppose to defend, and that he said he was on "sabbatical", and felt too much "like a rock star". I saw the story on TV, and heard it on 840 and 970......BUT over on 720, they were still checking traffic in the Glenn Lerner traffic center, and the Glenn Lerner helicopter, with not a mention of this story in their newscasts.

A big time Las Vegas attorney not showing up for a murder trial, and saying to the judge "sanction me if you want", thumbing his nose at the court, while KDWN ignores the story and runs his sponsorships really seems to show the priorities this station has to it's listeners.

Pretty scary if you ask me.

I also noticed they had a 1.6 share (12+ is all I get to see), so I wonder if anyone really cares.

Does anyone have a problem with this?

Hmm.. Check your radio, I heard Nate T-Bomb with the story this morning around 8:30. Guess that makes YOUR credibility something to question too eh?? And trust me, I'm no fan of K-Yawn.

I'm sorry, I'll clarify....In the 1 1/2 hours I listened to Heidi, the hour I listened to Doyle, and the 3 hours I listened to Savage, I did not hear the story in any of the newscasts I heard. BUT....I DID hear the Glenn Lerner Traffic center, over and over and over.

As far as MY credibility, this is the 2nd time I have asked a legitimate question, only to be told that my credibility was in question. I was in radio years ago, and have continued to have an interest in it (but I am now in another line of work). To ask a question, and not have an answer, but an attack, shows that some people on this board fall far below the line of industry intelligence.

I only asked a question I thought was worthy of discussion!

Is anyone else surprised KDWN only has a 1.6? Beasley spent $17 Million Dollars to buy 720. They sound more professional than they did under the old ownership (at least towards the end when they ran the station into the ground). They have a much larger staff, news in particular. Yet KDWNs ratings are only about a half a share higher than before Beasley took over.

I noticed local radio didn't pick up the front page RJ story about Glen Lerner not showing up for some guy's murder trial..and getting chewed out by the judge.

Ad placement seems to be growing, "the xyz weather center," "the xyz traffic center," "the xyz studios," "the xyz hotline."

Jay, my proposal...the talent has to reach a younger demo...esp. the 25-34 crowd. Ed Schultz, and Stephanie Miller, will bring a younger audience:

Answer:

ED SCHULTZ LIVE 9am-NOON

Heidi Harris NOON-3pm

Michael Savage 3pm-6pm

Stephanie Miller 6pm-9pm

Sir Royal Masters 9pm-10pm

and COAST TO COAST 10pm-2am

Jerry Doyle 2am-5am WITH REFEEDS ON WEEKENDS BOTH SAT AND SUN MIDDAY

Nathan Tannebaum's News 5am-9am

It makes no sense to have C2C on a shoestring patterned signal (KXNT) operating at only 25,000 watts. KDWN at 50,000 watts covers the entire western US, at least 12 states. Roughly, KXNT is only going down to San Diego and then NNE to Utah.

I wonder if the station is more about the land values around their towers? Which actually might have gone down in value. I like seeing people like the Kdull owners waste money. They are too stubborn to depart from their mindset to make real changes.

Oh, and when you got stations in the Vegas market that insist that WMD were found in Iraq, the bar for "credibility" is not set too high.

KDWN towers are highly visible looking east beyond Boulder Hwy towards Lk Las Vegas, and KXNT towers are also highly visible looking north to North Las Vegas. You are correct, as when a station is sold, the property value the towers sit on is taken into consideration. Sometimes towers may have more than one station on them.

They should've left KDWN the way it was before. At least you could call in and talk about what you want. Don't hear alot of the 70+ plus callers anymore discussing big band music from the 1940's.

The corporate station just doesn't work any better than their competitor KXNT

I don't understand the attachment to KXNT. It doesn't sound like any great shakes to me. I thought KDWN's coverage of the fire was sharper, to the point, better delivered and more energetic. Their street reporter was a great source for both information and the "feel" of the situation on the ground. You can critique their talk lineup, but their news is first-rate in my book, and would probably outshine anything below the top 30 markets on commercial news-talk radio.

KXNT's towers aren't visible from anywhere in the city. They're way out past the race track on I-15.

Yeah those towers in Northtown your looking at are KSFN's.

All the crackpots on talk radio were gungho Mite Romney for about a week--saying he was their man and he was going to win---then they hit a brick wall--called super Tuesday --and are now becoming Mccainiacs slowly but surely.
