Wasn't Ed on 970 before they went Business? Kdwn is claiming Heidie is the #1 HOST IN Vegas. If I was the morning "source" I would be looking for a new job or get a face lift and a tummy tuck. He is too old for Vegas. Vegas retired people are listening to KNYE.
Just because KDWN claims she is #1 doesn't mean it's true. It's just a bunch of hype. Not a bad tactic though, sometimes if you say something enough it becomes a self fullfiling prophecy.
It will be interesting to see how Heidi does against Rush. Years ago when KXNT stole Rush Limbaugh away from them, KDWN put on Cheryl Godfrey in his place. I liked everything about Cheryl from her voice to her Libertarian political views. However, no one listened to her, Rush/KXNT had the entire talk share. KDWN has never had ratings during those hours since. Of course it didn't help that once the old owners fired Cheryl (a juicy story from what I was told) they turned those hours into a infomercial w-house for a decade.
I would say that Heidi has a better chance to succeed than Cheryl did for three reasons. 1. Heidi is much more of an in your face radio personality. As much as I liked Cheryl and appreciated how classy and feminine she sounded, she was too laid back and low key for talk radio. Her delivery was too NPRish and her content too intellectual to appeal to the masses.
2.promotion..I have heard several people complain that KDWN promotes Heidi way too much, that it's Heidi overkill. Yes, it's annoying, but I also think it's very smart. I like their promote-promote-promote attitude. She's their only local weekday host, they might as well make her as top of mind as possible and condition listeners into thinking she is bigger than life itself, Let's compare that to the old K-DAWN who never once promoted Cheryl or any of their non-infomercial programs.
3. Rush is past his peak. When Cheryl competed against Limbaugh in the 90s, Rush was the biggest thing ever. Now I would say he's not quite as popular as he used to be. That being said, he is still the #1 talk host in America and the odds on favorite to win the local talk battle during those hours. If Heidi makes a big dent in Rush's numbers it would be very impressive.
I don't think that Alan Stock needs to look for a new job. First of all, despite the promo you heard, KXNT is the #1 talk station when Alan is on (as well as most other times). Also, because Heidi's hours changed, Alan will only be competing against his former co-host for 30 minutes a day. This really isn't morning source Vs. Heidi Harris, it's KXNT's morning source Vs. KDWNs morning news block and Rush against Heidi.
Finally, maybe Nye counties retired people listen to KNYE, but not many in Vegas do.
