KDWN:New Years Baby

On New Years KDWN ran a news report about the first LV baby born in 2007. Then they aired a soundbite of the 17 year old mother. She sounded totally illiterate. She was mumbling and I couldn't understand a word she said. It was actually kind of funny. Then the reporter said in a cheerful voice "In case your wondering the baby's doing just fine".

I wasn't wondering if the baby's ok, they usually are. Instead I was wondering if the baby's illegitimate and if so will Nevada taxpayers have to support this New Years baby for 18 years? I was also wondering if Nevada still has one of the nations highest teenage pregnancy rates. What does it say about Nevada that an illiterate child had the first baby of 2007?

If KDWN had a local talk show maybe some of these issues could be discussed. Since a new Govenor was sworn in today I was thinking what would happen if Gibbons ever tries to pass a big tax increase. There would be no outcry from local talk radio since (with the exception of a few hours on KXNT) there is no local talk radio. When Guinn proposed his historic tax increase it was wonderful to hear the KDWN hosts and callers bash the govenor and call him a RINO.,

The old KDWN would never have known there was a baby, as there was no news department. Instead, there would be speculation as to whether the first baby of '07 was an illegal alien, and bluehairs would call up and gripe about "anchor babies". Then the usual suspects from the Minutemen or whatever would be trotted out.
There would be very little "locality" about the discussion, except for the fact that it originated from a studio in LV.

KDWN is trying to give you something that doesn't exist in many cities in 2007 -- a station that actually tells you what is going on in your city. It isn't perfect, and it's still a work in progress. Complain about the lack of local talk by all means. But don't disdain the fact that you actually have a commercial radio station trying to do news in your market for the first time in years, and trying to pull out of the underachievement and complacency that have marked the LV market in the news-talk field.

You NAILED the different subcultures that used to call KDWN .I guess I already forgot how bad most of their callers were. I can appreciate that KDWN is trying to do local news. My guess is they will eventually realize they need to add local talk...this time with call screeners.
