KDWN website says jobs available

If you go to the KDWN website and click on the about us section it says openings exist for news anchors and reporters, traffic reporters, board ops and talk show hosts,Since this just went up a few days ago the question is are they totally disatisfied with what station sounds like so soon after changes.was this posted in error or are they just trying to build up resumes of potential employees?

Beasley was still running ads in the RJ for a KCYE PD long after the job had been filled. Of course, that was 2 or 3 PDs ago. Just another example of a company that doesn't have their act together.

LF

beasley ran an ad in a job paper...featuring a women showing some leg----for sales reps and promised 6 figure income...but the ads on kdawn are hold overs from the old days...the med test guy...tyhe car broker..the storage vaults guy etc...

But these adds for employment include the e mail addresses of the new program director and news director. By the way are Jim Dallas and Pete Moss working at KDWN as board ops?

I know Pete Moss is on Saturday mornings handling the callers on Don Davis' gardening show so I would assume he is doing board ops on that day and other days (it would be hard to believe that he would just come in for those 2 hours every week). Jim Dallas said before he went off air that he would be behind-the-scenes so I assume he is as well, even though I haven't heard him on-air at all since the format change. I had some correspondence with Hart Kirch when the format changed and know that he is no longer with the station.

I heard his ad on Savage a few times while listening on the east coast and for a while his ads were on KDWN constantly. I also remember him on one afternoon with Jim Dallas with a 30 minute info-mercial . His name is Mr. Elliot

they seem to have more infomercials in the 9 pm hour...I miss the Bob Massi legal infoshow and the Dr Landau show was not bad either...a friend of mine bought a car from one of the car brokers that advertised ...and he said the response is way down from the old format...the "there is some dog crap on the freeway" news format doesn't cut it unless they get a local talk host or two

In response to the question about the ads being posted for KDWN. I wrote them and posted them on our website (and on several other radio websites) for the simple reason that we are hiring people for the positions listed. On another note, I really appreciate the posts here. (Both the good and the not-so-good.) Input is always valuable and I like to hear what passionate radio people have to say. If any of you ever want to send me a note directly or call me to discuss, I would be happy to hear from you at: [email protected] and my office line is 702-730-0344.

Glad to see you pay attention to this website. Ms. Burke, You could piease a lot of KDWN listeners and former ones if you would go local against Rush from 9-12 and reinstate the often wacky but enjoyable light and fluffy Pete Moss overnight in lieu of daytime repeat programming.

Yeah, and not run Mark Levin's first hour twice in a higher TSL daypart! Oh, and I don't believe they sell fried chicken in 7-Elevens there, so Neal Boortz is probably a waste.

Better 9 pm than 9 am on the infomercials...

"Dog crap on the freeway?" Where are about half of radio listeners at any given time? On the freeway, of course. Charlotte Burke is a former CBS News exec and way out of the league of the LV market. You're lucky to have her. Yes, local talk would be good if it can be done without breaking the budget, but not a return to
the Pete Moss and the Anachronisms era of KDWN. Put an ad in the trades and search out some eager
young talent who wants to be the next Rush or Sean. Right now, there's no place for those kids to break in.

Maybe the car broker thinks 720 should return to the "dog crap" that got them a fractional share point. Be glad Beasley is trying to make something of that station worthy of its 50 kW signal, and didn't just give up and go sports the way many (including myself) thought they would.

Hint: With Jerry Doyle, Roy Masters, and Jim Bohannon, they won't be making anything of the station. Hail KXNT!

Although it's too early to get a handle on things, so far KDWNs numbers did not improve since making the changes. Instead KXNT has been trending down. Overall the AM share is low and keeps getting lower.
This at a time when new AM stations such as KBET hit the air.

My suggestions for KDWN: Like everyone else is saying, add a local talk show (no, Jerry Doyle is not a local show even if he is based out of Vegas). Also add a little warmth to the morning news block, don't over do it with chatter, but add a little more interaction between the anchors. Check out the AM show on 1160 KSL/Salt Lake (it comes in clear in Vegas early in the morning), they do an excellent job. It's fast paced and very professional sounding, yet they sound likeable and human, not mean and cold like KDWN news can come across as.

I had a chance to listen to KDWN during the past week while in LV, and Jay F is right... they need to do some work on the morning news block. There are two co-anchors, but there are so many voices coming at you so quickly, they both get lost in the shuffle. Shouldn't the co-anchors at least talk to each other? The way it is now, they could be in different buildings, or pre-recording everything and putting it into the automation system. In fact, except for the time checks and traffic updates, it sounds like it is automated. And using one voice on the traffic reports would be more effective.

It sounds like someone decided to reinvent the wheel when it comes to doing all-news when there was no need to. Do it like WBBM in Chicago has been doing for years, it works.

The rest of the day, KDWN is doing a good job of local news every half hour.

As others have said, a local talk show is needed someplace, mostly likely 9am until noon as Neil Boortz is unlikely to take any listeners from Limbaugh. Bob Massi with legal advice would work within a local talk show as would other "Ask the Expert" (timebrokered) segments. Aim those three hours at the non-Rush audience, which is considerable, rather than another political talk show.

knx in LA Kcbs in sf... don't get the ratings of kfi and kgo with their local talk hosts...therefore dog crap on the freeway news + local talk beats dog crap on the freeway news by itself... in fact some listeners call in the dog drap news to the talk shows...therefore kfi kgo often have better breaking news.....e.g. a kgo listener called in while on vacation in Hawaii...to report an earthquake...kgo had a live account of the earthquake before the networks and before the all news stations......In the event of a breaking news/traffic story...I think kxnt will get local call ins ...no one knows what kdwn's number is anymore...they will be left behind

Just because the old crazy KDWN was out-of-touch with the needs of the market, doesn't mean that
Beasley will automatically perform better. it doesn't work that way.

KDWN in order to become dominant must re-position KXNT. KDWN has an opportunity, but their lineup is full of second and even third tier talk shows. KDWN of old had two things going for it: An unbelievable signal, and an ultra local Las Vegas feel. KDWN sounds rather sanitized now.

A morning news-block is a tough to build brand new in 2006. The stations that tend to thrive with morning news have been at it for years. I would grade the relaunch as a 4 on a 1-10 scale.

Yes, and KXNT already has a rather "sanitized", as you put it, morning news/info/talk block. KDWN needs a yeller and screamer who makes people rip their hair out to counterprogram 840. You know, the kind of guy who has no idea what he's talking about, pronounces words like Paulie Walnuts, and makes conservatives look like oafs.

Remember the previous morning show had no support staff what ever. 2 men who had to do it all. Speaking ot those 2 ,Compare the voice quality of Hart Kirch and Ken Stahl with those of John Shaffer and Dick Shannon. Top 10 market for the former. For the latter less than the current market number for Vegas.
