KDWN's Pete Moss

Beasley must have told Pete "the parttime guy" Moss to keep his show more news/issues oriented when he is on during the day. He mentioned several times that the "light and fluffy" talk would now only be on at night.

As hard as he tried to stay focused on current events, Moss's callers insisted on talking about the good old days. One man called in and rattled off every radio show he used to listen to in 1939. Then a woman called who sounded about 100 years old (and probably was around that age) and talked about how much she preferes "light and fluffy" talk.

As I am a prominent member of the PTP Family, I also prefer the "light & fluffy", because if I want "news-oriented talk", I can listen to Rush, Sean, Savage, Reagan, & others. There are many, many persons who don't want to hear politics 24/7. Sorry.

Re: KDWN's Pete Moss yawn

Truman "Tru" the "hawker" Hawkins was quoted in a blurb in citilife weekly mag ....that the station was going to be more "news" ....I thought it was going sports?...he said he was moving to San Marcos Texas...he has a good radio voice and he is a good pitchman for informercials....Mark Edwards said he was moving to wisconson...that leaves moss, stall, dallas and kirsch....will they leave town by greyhound? Dallas the dullist ...exposed one of his callers as a "traitor" to the USA ....maybe he will get a job with the dhs?

I have also heard that KDWN will move in a more news oriented direction. I think that the sports rumor was started on this board based on the fact that Beasley owns a sports station in Florida. Sports is already saturated in Las Vegas, I would be very surprised if KDWN goes sports.

The caller Jim Dallas called a traiter is named Clay Season. He is a left leaning Libertarian who is one of the most frequent callers to both KDWN and KXNT.

I've heard him on Doug Basham's show too...(but I can't get that show on line... just the replay on klav)...I think less than 100 people are making 90% of the calls to las vegas talk radio stations...I don't understand how moss can recognize their voices though..

.the sports talk format rumor was in one of the local weekly papers I think....as well...or in some industry paper..

..I'd keep Moss and ken stall doing "off hours" shows...If they go news that impacts kdox growth plans ...dallas doesn't do much for me...I would replace with mark levine maybe

We have different tastes drty, Jim Dallas is currently my favorite local talk host. KDWN should keep him, especially if they are moving towards a news focus.

Hart Kirsch has a good voice and I find some of his discussions to be interesting, but I think he is the most dangerous personality on the station. His views and opinions are radically different than the core talk listener. He comes across as hostile to the values and beliefs most talk listeners have. He get's lots of complaints on other shifts. For example on Ken Stahl's weekend show, several callers say they love Ken but can't listen to him in the morning because they "can't stand" the guy he is teamed up with. The solution is to have Hart read straight news and not give opinions.

Pete Moss is a wonderful radio personality. His elderly listeners LOVE him, he brings such joy into their lives. I hope that KDWN keeps him. But since he attracts such an old audience, if Beasley wants to make a serious run at 25-54 or even 35-64 (and that cluster could use the numbers!) they need to move Moss exclusively to "off hours", I would give him Midnight-5A and get rid of the tape delayed Michael Reagan hours.

Music Mastero, you are my favorite Pete Moss regular caller, actually the only one that entertains me. As a huge music fan myself, I could listen to you talk about music for hours. I especially enjoyed your discussion about one hit wonders.

Who exactly is Pete Moss anyhow? He seems to be on 7 days a week in the wee hours and very frequently on weekends, but how long has he been at KDWN? I have been listening to that station since I moved out here in 1990 and don't remember hearing him until the past few years. Has he always been on this often? And what is his story? There is no picture or bio of him on the station website and his demographic seems to be exclusively 70 and over. Listening to him and his callers is like being in a time warp; you feel like you have just gone back in time 40 years. Quite unique but I am just puzzled as to who this guy is and how long he has been on Vegas radio.

I don't know his whole bio but Pete Moss has been in radio a looong time, As amazing as this sounds, I believe that Pete Moss started his radio career in the 1930s. He tells stories about all kinds of things he did pre WW2. As old as his callers are, I actually think that Pete is older than most of them. I don't know his exact age, but my guess is that he's around 80 or 85 years old. I think it's great that he's still in radio and still entertaining listeners.

For most of his time in radio he has been a music DJ. He worked all over the country including Los Angeles in the late 60s and early 70s. He has worked in Las Vegas radio for the past 30 years or so. He was on the old 920 KORK as well as the old AM country stations, either KRAM, KVEG, or both. In the early/mid 1990s he did mornings at the old 105.5 KRRI when they were oldies.

He joined KDWN around 2001. At first he truly was the "part time guy" and just did the occasional weekend or fill in shift. Of course in recent years it seems like he is on all the time, at night and especially on the weekend. He is on so much during the weekend that it seems like he lives in the studio.

This could actually be Moss's second stint at KDWN. If I remember correctly he did mornings in the 1970s teaming up with the late Terry Moss (no relation). I think they were called the "Dawn Busters" , this was pre "Snooze Busters".

Yes, I remember listening to Pete in Los Angeles in the 1960's. In 1968 or 69 he switched a stodgy old MOR station to AOR in Riverside (92.7/1570). It sounded cool but lasted less than a year. I didn't realize he is that old tho.

I believe that Pete has said "on-air" that he started in radio in 1953, which means that he has been in radio around 53 years! I'm guessing that he could as young as 67-68, & maybe as old as 80-86. If you go www.laradio.com, find the "where are they now" section, click on the letter M, you can look up his bio, I think.

And if you think that it is unusual to be on-air at that age, consider that the legendary George Putnam is 92 & STILL on the air in Southern California! And I believe that HE started radio in the 30's!
