KDXE 1380 Format Change

Yep, the Wheel Of Format Changes spins at KDXE 1380AM. The station does an about-face going from conservative talk to a Hispanic music format. I drove into Little Rock on Saturday afternoon (January 15) and noticed music in Spanish on 1380. I kept listening to confirm the changes, luckly I had to wait only a few minutes for the top of hour ID. No change in the callsign. Sounds like an LMA to me.

I'm not sure what triggered the change, but despite the recent and current coverage issues of KARN-FM, they had all the A list conservative talkers leaving KDXE the scraps. It also didn't help KDXE having its own coverage issues. Then there is the daytime competition from brokered KLRG which seems to have the conspiracy niche talk (Alex Jones, etc), and American Family Radio's two Central Arkansas FM transmitters KANX/KBDO.

Any thoughts on this folks?

1380's directional pattern nulls Conway both day and night. As a result, the signal cannot be received here at all inside buildings and is only of marginal strength on car radios. This is a problem since Conway is now part of the Little Rock MSA. So, no matter what they program, the station is likely to be an "also-ran" in the ratings.

As an aside, I cannot tell you how frustrated I am that Citadel has locked up all the 'A List' talkers in the market, yet refuses to fix KARN-FM in a timely manner. It's been operating on low power for FOUR MONTHS now. Again, no signal in Conway, and Conway is part of the primary market. Either FIX the thing or relenquish the license and/or syndication rights so that someone else can provide Rush, Beck, and especially Dave Ellswick to the listeners.

I spoke with an employee at KARN a couple of months ago regarding the problems with their FM. I somewhat shocked and suprised that the company (Citadel) was in no big hurry to have the repairs made.

I'll check in again with them and see what is happening with this.

I'm REALLY surprised this hasn't been fixed.

This has to kill KARN in the fall book through no fault of the programming department. I still think it's interesting that they continue to run at this power level without filing an STA. That part makes it illegal as well as being a very poor business decision.

Citadel let their top rated sister station KIPR-92.3 FM run at low power for over 6 months one time. American Corporate media at work.

That was back I think in 2009. The McCluster business model is starting to bite and bite hard. I can name several stations just in SE Ark that were purchased by group owners and later went silent due to mismanagement, technical issues or both.
