KEARTH 101 (it's only 80's if we say so)

Obviously, since April, and has been discussed in this thread, they've adjusted and added titles that I didn't see on the list. Unless they're doing an all 80s weekend, just in the last 2 hours alone:

It Takes Two - Rob Base
No More Words - Berlin
Tenderness - General Public
The Look Of Love - ABC
The Warrior - Scandal
We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
When I Hear Music - Debbie Deb
Whip It - Devo

Etc...

Kinda makes Spirit In The Sky, You're So Vain and It's Too Late sound old.

Until then, shut up about it.

You've got some nerve to talk to people the way you do...No wonder many on this board and RI dislike you. The proof is in the pudding. You did it to yourself, again.

Once calling you out as classy for providing me with the clock discussion a few months back, I now have second thoughts.

thanks.

I wanted to give this a separate reply, and as you can see, I thought about it for several minutes before posting.

Those on this board and Lance's dislike me for one of several reasons:

1. I disagree with their programming philosophies and say so every time they bring them up (which is too often).
2. They are holding a grudge, over a decade old, from when I was a moderator here.
3. My presence represents professional programmers who know how to research and make a living at it as a result.
4. Someone pushes so hard, ignoring polite requests to stop, that I finally lose my patience and my temper.

You are mostly #1, with a touch of #3, and (as proven by my outbursts) definitely #4.

Many people say "The proof is in the pudding" but the actual saying is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." The Debbie Deb (Deborah Kowalski) song was a big dance-club hit in 1983 but never made the Hot 100. It is one of several 1980s hits which KRTH has recently added to the playlist. KRTH also re-added a Led Zeppelin song which wasn't even released as a single. It's called Stairway something-or-other. Here is the updated list:

99 Luftballons - Nena (2/1983)
867-5309/Jenny - Tommy Tutone (4/1982)
1999 - Prince (44/1982, 12/1983, 40/1999)

Many people say "The proof is in the pudding" but the actual saying is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." The Debbie Deb (Deborah Kowalski) song was a big dance-club hit in 1983 but never made the Hot 100. It is one of several 1980s hits which KRTH has recently added to the playlist. KRTH also re-added a Led Zeppelin song which wasn't even released as a single. It's called Stairway something-or-other.

It's been awhile but as I recall, 12 inch singles weren't eligible for the Hot 100. I believe that was changed later.

Unless I overlooked a title "Satisfaction" which was on it's way to #1 50 years ago is the oldest song they play. Very few 60's songs on there. I noticed only a few Beatles,as well. I remember not too long ago KRTH would play "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens and "Shout" by the Isley Brothers, the only 50's songs they would play. Those two titles are still on there even though "La Bamba" is from Los Lobos and "Shout" is a completely different song.

Only difference in KRTH,KSWD,KLOS and Jack these days are Shotgun Tom and Charlie Tuna, Tuna is the last link to the KHJ days.

Tuna is the last link to the KHJ days.

And Tuna was the DJ who was ID'd in the OP as the one who didn't think "Physical" was from the 80s.

We're not talking about a museum here. This is supposed to be an ad-supported business. And they're doing a great job.

Charlie Tuna has been on the air in Southern California for almost 48 years.

Just a shade over five of them were at KHJ (November 1967-January 1972 and May 1977-August 1978).

He's not at KRTH because he's a link to KHJ. He's there because he's willing and able to execute a format that works and wins today.

KRTH is evolving. CBS-FM is evolving. Won't be long before songs from the 1970s are a memory at Classic Hits stations.

Be sure to check back in 2040 when we start complaining that KRTH is playing Happy, Dark Horse, Blurred Lines and Shake It Off five or six times a day. :)

As for Charlie Tuna, I agree that he could sound good at any station, any format. He worked at top-40 stations KOMA, WMEX, KHJ, KROQ and KIIS (among others) and he played country at KIKF, standards at KLAC, oldies at KRLA and KCBS-FM, and adult contemporary at KBIG, and in late 1993/early 1994 he hosted the morning show at Sports Radio 710 KMPC. And is there anyone better than Charlie Tuna at "hitting the post" (talking over a song's instrumental intro and concluding at the precise split-second the vocal starts)?

A) If KRTH is even around then and B) those songs might be on much sooner than you think! "Uptown Funk" may be the next "Brown Eyed Girl", so get ready for a new generation of RD posters to make observations about repetition and dinky playlists. Now we just have to find an eventual replacement for that Eagles song from 1977 and that low charting 80's song from Modern English!

Hopefully, that next generation will be better at understanding the answers they get when they question it and not repeat themselves to the point of proving Einstein right.

Give us an example of a major market radio station (I'll stipulate any market in the top-50 as major) in recent history (let's say 30 years, to match the size of the two primary ratings demographics) that changed format, decided to change back, and generated higher ratings and revenue after the switchback.

I realize the other thread was closed by the mods and it's unfortunate, but in response to your question here. I cannot answer it, since you have all inside and outs of what goes on in the world of radio, in addition to what others like hobbyists and music fans have all contributed on their part.

I will say this, any radio station that plays music that satisfies their audiences and music fans (and there are many of them too) alike is a victory to all. WOGL is one of them, many small markets are as well. While they may have not actually changed formats, the stations that go above and beyond to satisfy all have "changed their tune", since they are providing music that people enjoy, which is reflected in the ratings / shares and have the reputation of not sounding, by-the book, rock hard with ad nauseam presentations like their counterparts out west and stations like them.

KFXM has a disclaimer on their main home page and is a statement I highly, highly agree with. It's all about the listener.

I know you'll disagree, but that's my honest answer. I'll consider this matter closed, if you do as well.

I have re-opened this thread. Please avoid the old circular arguments .... the same old things, over and over.

Censorship is never the correct answer, even for inane arguments.

Censorship is not what happened here.

Censorship is defined as "the practice of officially examining media, and suppressing unacceptable parts". Nothing was suppressed here. The thread was closed because it had devolved into another "us vs. them" situation and it remained available for anyone to read, without any moderator edits.

Inane is defined as "silly or stupid". If you'll include "repetitive" in what you call "silly" or "stupid", I agree with you.

Now, let's see how long we can go before it happens again. I have my doubts that Frank's gentle admonishment is going to stick.

This post is a great argument for the censorship. Please, focus on radio and not de-constructing one sentence posts.
