Some threads are straying off topic. Let's stay focused on radio folks.

And...instead of finding a reason to argue about what should or shouldn't have been done, or who's to blame, (there will be a time and place for that soon enough,) let's focus on fixing the problem first.

Sorry, I can't agree

CAB, I would be prefer to stay focused on radio, but since you openend the door, I feel I must take exception to your "editorial".

Now is exactly the time to investigate what went wrong. I agree, this board may not be the place assess blame. But I have seen several government officials who were being put to the question try to weasel out of tough questions with the same arguement ("this is not the time...").

In 1990, the Philadelphia Inquirer won the Pulitzer Prize for an investigative series it did on the Red Cross (which it called "the OPEC of blood"). It's practices are - at best - questionable. The organization asks the public for money but profits handsomely from its blood "business." They are able to pay their executives very high salaries and bonuses and build lavish buildings for themselves. Before anyone donates anything, I would recommend they investigate the organizations to which they are considering contributing - especially the Red Cross.

I don't care about "real people's" politics, religion or lifestyle. I do care that real people chose to live in a flood plain, chose not to evacuate, chose to loot and rape, and chose to abandon their companion animals. I agree with the suggestion that New Orleans be bulldozed. The location is not safe and never was. I don't think the government is doing anyone a favor by rebuilding homes in locations inherently unsafe.

Thanks. Back to radio.

I'm sure an investigation will occur.

But the only place on Radio-Info.com where comments on the storm other than those that directly relate to broadcasting is the "Off The Air" board.

Radio-Info.com has rules and regulations that need to be followed.

And I think the idea of the "Off The Air" board is a brilliant one. It allows regular users to express opinions on non-broadcasting issues without cluttering-up the other messageboards.

So, should we bulldoze the entire Gulf and Atlantic coastline from Texas to the Carolinas? What about southern and central California? Or Johnstown, PA, which has had a few floods of its own? Or Carbon Hill, AL, which gets hit by a tornado on pretty much an annual basis?

As far as NO goes, I don't see a lot of the worst-hit areas being rebuilt for a few reasons. Will insurance companies want to insure construction in those areas knowing that this can happen again and probably will within the next 40 years? After the utter chaos of the evacuation process, would the government even allow the construction of any form of subsidized housing there? How many of the 500,000 displaced people will have the ability or interest to come back when it is rebuilt anyway?

Even once the area is fully populated again, the center of population will be to the north and west of where it was.

Yes, let's donate. I have and will try to do more. There are a lot of hard feelings on both sides of this issue and we just need to set it all aside and do what we can.

It is a brilliant idea, Joe! I couldn't agree more!
