Keeping Score

We still have a little over 3 weeks before the year is over, but I thought I'd take a look and see who we lost this year.

WROC:
Melanie Barnas
Joylynn Whitfield
Lia Lando
Dave Yates
Jonathan Myers (New Orleans)
John Stehlin
Dave McKinley (WGRZ Buffalo)

WHEC:
Chris Gloninger (WTEN Albany)

WHAM:
Richard McCollough (WSPA Spartanburg,SC/Greenville,SC/Asheville, NC)
Kyle Clark (KUSA Denver)
Kristen Miranda (WBTV Charlotte, NC)

And why not mention who we've gained:
WROC:
Meghan Backus (WSHM Springfield, MA)
Kevin Carroll (R News)

WHEC:
Catherine Varnum (WETM Elmira)
Jim Lytle (R News)

WHAM:
Stacey Pensgen (SUNY Brockport)
Howard Manges

It is no surprise that WROC has seen a mass exodus of personnel from that station. Nexstar's idea of rewarding an employee is to re-negotiate a new contract with a decrease in pay. That station's news department is a joke in Rochester, along with FOX 31 news.

WHEC:
Chris Gloninger (WTEN Albany)

Channel 10 has had some personnel replacements over the years, but unlike 10 most of them don't come from stations in the boonies where experience consists of two years reporting on air.

WHAM:
Richard McCollough (WSPA Spartanburg,SC/Greenville,SC/Asheville, NC)
Kyle Clark (KUSA Denver)
Kristen Miranda (WBTV Charlotte, NC)

McCollough left town, I believe, because he couldn't land a full-time job at 13 and wasn't interested in working for 8. Miranda is smart to move down south to an area (North Carolina) where the population, unlike Monroe County and New York, is growing, not shrinking. Same goes for Clark.

And why not mention who we've gained:
WROC:
Meghan Backus (WSHM Springfield, MA)
Kevin Carroll (R News)

Want to predict how long those two people will last at 8? That station is just something to add to one's resume. Anyone thinking of making a full-time career out of working at Channel 8 either has been with the station for years and ready for retirement; or they have roots here in the community and don't want to leave.

WHEC:
Catherine Varnum (WETM Elmira) Another Elmira TV hire. So was LeClair and she's been at 10 for many years.

Jim Lytle (R News) Good move on 10's part to hire someone local viewers actually know.

WHAM:

Stacey Pensgen (SUNY Brockport) What experience does this person bring to the table?

Howard Manges Never heard of this person nor seen his work.

You forgot Christine Webb on WHAM

Hmm...lets see...Kyle Clark, ...Followed by Christine Webb,...followed by Kristen Miranda.

I don't suppose anyone would dare use the "revolving door" comment about Ch 13, which is so often affixed to your description of Channel 8,...would you now?

Just wonderin' is all....

Granted that both stations have seen their share of reporters leave, but in the case of 8 it had more to do over renegotiated contracts, or just being fed up with the place, while people at 13 are leaving for bigger markets (Miranda) or going back to their home state (Webb).
In the past four years alone add up the number of people who have left WROC and compared that figure to WHAM TV and I think you will find that 8 is in the lead when it comes people departing; either on their own or being forced out.

Even the best stations sometimes have a flurry of departures, usually by coincidence. It might be a bit early to start calling 13 a "revolving door" but with the prospect of an ownership change -- you never know what could happen. I think a lot of it depends on the decisions management makes while the sale is pending, and after it's complete. It also depends on how well the replacements perform their on-air duties.

Usually, new ownership is smart enough to avoid fixing something that's not broken... but only time will tell.

It is not unusual for people to move from one market to another. At least there are jobs available in television news. Try finding something in radio news these days.

I wish the people who left the best of luck....and welcome those individuals coming to Rochester. Sure many of those people won't be here for the long-haul, but that's the nature of the business.

Kristen Miranda must not be leaving WHAM till at least after the holidays as she was anchoring the 11pm newscast last night.

I believe she is leaving WHAM TV in early January; just in time before winter weather really hits Western New York.

Kristen Miranda Last Day is Thursday, She Talk about Last Night 5 O'Clock News, Friday she Will be Mobving Charlotte NC, Kristen Good Luck in Charlotte NC, I hear Rachel Barnahart is Weekend anchor at 13 WHAM,
PS i will Moving to Charlotte in May

Barnhart most likely will get the job since she's already had experience at 8; and besides I don't think either Flasch or Walsh wants the anchor spot since that would mean working weekends and being away from their families. Of course 13 could always choose one of their new hires, but that remains unlikely, unless they want to groom that person for a future full-time anchor position.
