As the weather there gets worse and as the Southwest runs out of water Buffalo will look a lot more attractive.

Keeping The Bills in Buffalo

The weather in Buffalo is not as bad as some lead you to believe. The people there who are always ready to lend a helping hand more than make up for it. If you grow up there it just becomes a way of life. 'Getting back on track Buffalo always had great radio stations, some of the best heard anywhere. I don't know about now but those personalities left a lasting impression.
While I've liked living in Northern Arizona, the influx of Californians and Pacific Northwesterners is
ruining the state. We've always had concerns with water availability but seeing newcomers plant
lawns, roses, lilacs and other water wasting landscaping is beyond comprehension. Californians
want to change Arizona to what they left back home. Problem is, that is exactly why they are leaving
now..Buffalo has always looked attractive to me, aside from the weather. It has a great deal to offer
Agreed..... You cannot imagine the disappointment moving "out west" and not being able to listen to WKBW
1520. Instead we got KOMA 1520 Oklahoma City.... not a bad station at all but certainly no KB.
Buffalo is "THE CITY OF GOOD NEIGHBORS" and the people there are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
More than a few sunbelt transplants have moved back to Buffalo. There's only so much heat, humidity, drought, palmetto bugs, hurricane and tornado warnings that a person can endure. As to the refugees, they're widely welcomed and they contribute to the social fabvric of the area. A recent Buffalo News analysis (-Caitlin Dewey, April 14, 2022) indicated that between 2010 and 2020, the US Census Bureau under-counted the population of Erie County by 36,000 residents. Granted, those 36 thousand residents wouldn't have propelled Buffalo from ADI market #53 to market #49 (IOW, "Top 50"), but the under-count was sufficiently significant to have adversely affected allocation of federal subsidies and programs. Also, Buffalo is a border city. The ebb and flow of visitors from Canada is pronounced, especially as Canadians (particularly prior to Covid shutdowns) regularly shop at the Walden Galleria and Niagara Outlet Mall, own property and 'play' in Ellicottville, and attend Bills and Sabres games.
Precisely why this sunbelt transplant is strongly considering the move back to Beautiful, Fabulous, Friendly,
Kind, Welcoming Buffalo, NY! Tired of using the washer gray water to keep trees and plants alive. Tired of
the endless sunny days and the hope of rain to fill parched reservoirs. Tired of the stampede of newcomers who
wear tights, have pony tails, drive motorcycles in Dec, Jan and Feb, then complain about the cold, etc, etc,
etc, etc, etc, etc.......
I'm a 20 year transplant to the south who, other than visiting family and friends in the summer has never once looked back. From the onerous tax burden, the ridiculously high cost of living, the horrific weather many months of the year, the political climate that results in N.Y. being the least free state in the U.S. and my vehicles rusting out in a few years from the road salt I just wish we had left sooner.
This forum has people trashing Buffalo and others singing its praises. Every area has pros and cons. As for this stadium deal, it is very BAD. Taxes will remain high and the Bills owner (who lives out of state) will get even richer. Buffalo got it wrong by not insisting on a dome downtown. If the current deal goes forward, it's a suburban albatross. When the team is bad, the stadium is half empty in December. Who can blame people for staying away...
They can do a dome, but it will cost twice as much. If people are squawking about this deal, imagine if it was twice the price.
Moving downtown would also add to the cost, because they'd have to buy the land. This stadium will sit on existing property, so it doesn't add to the cost.
At the same time this deal was proposed, there was a similar new stadium proposed for the Tennessee Titans. That deal replaces a stadium that is only 25 years old. It will be a covered stadium similar to the one in LA, and it is twice the price of the Buffalo stadium.
Just like Buffalo, the Tennessee deal is paid for by the county and the state. Just like Buffalo, the Tennessee owner lives out of state. But the Tennessee deal will include increases in the city's hotel tax and other hospitality taxes. So far, the Buffalo deal has no new taxes. The state of New York is using the governor's discretionary spending. Erie county is using budget surplus money. No new taxes.
So who got the better deal?
Neither one. The fine print always has surprises...
Using that logic, Buffalo will be stuck paying for the continued expense of an obsolete stadium but without a football team as it paying tenant. There is a cost to doing nothing. How is that a good thing?
There are many ways to spin the details. $850 million dollars of public money toward a stadium is a fleecing. Especially when the owner has something like 5 Billion. Fan isn't short for "Fanatic" for nothing. Greedy owners know how to play the idiots who live by the slogan -"Gotta support the team"...
Pegula is contributing $550 million, which is more then Erie County. So it's not like it's free to him. He also pays for the team that plays there. And he has another team in town. So he has some of his own skin in the game. It's not like he's just sitting on $5 billion in the bank. In the process, the county & the state get something they want.

I think in this case he echos the concerns of many WNY residents who are very sensitive about how their tax dollars are spent.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft financed Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. It was built with 100 percent PRIVATE money. Patriots Place is used year round with restaurants and shops. It has been a major success and the team has won 6 Super Bowls. That's a positive outcome.
Buffalo just has bitter whiners. All of their self worth seems to be tied to the Bills. Others have commented about the "National Spotlight" that the Bills give Buffalo. Right now, that legacy is "The guys who lost 4 straight Super Bowls". The Cubs finally won a World Series, so maybe their luck will change. However, you got hosed on the stadium deal...
