KEGL is stunting

I would frankly be shocked if this is a stunt. The last thing The Freak if it were to stick around is this type of confusion. Teasing the Eagle coming back only to say “gotcha!” Would be pretty bad and ineffective for a heritage brand. They’ve let the staff go. Freak is done. They could promote another format “landing” on 97.1, but everything down to the colors points to it being a return of the Eagle. That would be a pretty cruel stunt to pull and would be bad PR. My prediction: Eagle lands at 10am, launches with a bit of a heritage montage, maybe even a quick acknowledgement of their mistakes.
 
Remember, quite a few of you on here were 1 billion percent sure that rock wouldn’t land on 97.1 again. I honestly think that this is just a mistake, but if it isn’t, this wouldn’t be the first time that a station teased a format change and led everyone in the wrong direction.
 
iHeart has made Sunday night podcast broadcasts a regular part of their lineups across most formats. This was probably already scheduled and they decided to just let it run. The Eagle will return tomorrow at 10. The artists in the stunt montage are likely to be core artists of the new (old) format. Expect more voice tracked dayparts than there were during the last incarnation of the Eagle. The playlist will likely be their Rock Nation Premium Choice offering. No deep cuts, no album cuts (they already made the deep cuts on Friday). Anybody expecting otherwise hasn’t paid attention to the medium in the last 30 years.

I’ll go out on a limb and say I was one of the very first (maybe after Loverofradio) to be almost 100% certain Eagle was coming back, so I’ll have a spare plate of crow in the morning to enjoy just in case.

However, I don’t believe my prediction it may be patterned after WCHI is accurate, just because Lonestar 92.5 is down the hall.

If The Eagle does come back, which I’m sure it will…I hope it’s not the same. I don’t want to hear stuff that Lone Star is already playing. However, I think it’ll probably be very similar to what it was before the flip to The Freak happened, considering they’re using the same voice guy and a lot of the same music in the stunting montage.

Who knows, they could even resurrect Russ Martin from the dead with AI…🙃
 
Now thinking back, was any real testing or research done that showed that anyone wanted The Freak? Why did any of this over the last 18 months, need to happen?
 
By the way, I see that they disabled 97.1’s streaming on the website (the play buttons aren’t working), but you can still hear the stunting through the iHeart app. Just search “KEGL”.
 
When I lived in Illinois, Rock 108 KFMW - Waterloo/Cedar Falls/Cedar Rapids, IA had a massive signal and I could often pick them up where I lived. I understand that small markets are a bit different than major markets, but I wish 97.1 would play this type of rock! I know they won’t, but I can always dream, right?!

KFMW is #3 in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls market (#223) and #6 in the Cedar Rapids market (#200).

Speaking from a listener perspective, I feel a little bad for the listeners who like rock music. iHeart has taken them through alot. "We giveth The Eagle, we taketh The Eagle away". About as bad as a boyfriend or girlfriend that keeps leaving their mate, and asking to come back. You can't trust them to stick around...

This is not about (the small number of) listeners. It is about ratings and revenue. As the market changes ethnically and culturally, the ability of certain formats to survive and prosper changes.

Remember, the cold truth is that listeners are the product stations sell to advertisers.
 
How much overlap will this have with their classic rock sister station? Seems odd to have two stations that close in format in one cluster.
