Keith Brooks And First Broadcasting Settle Contract Dispute
After a week of hunger strike and countless phone calls and emails of support, FIRST BROADCASTING '80s KXCL (FLASH 92.1)/SACRAMENTO afternooner KEITH BROOKS exits the station. On TUESDAY (1/24), BROOKS and FIRST BROADCASTING reached a contract settlement that will allow him to seek work elsewhere. Reach out to BROOKS at (916) 868-9667 or [email protected].

BROOKS told ALL ACCESS, "I am no longer obligated to serve out the remainder of a 3 year no cut deal. It was never about money, never has been, never will be. I am committed to the craft of `FREE' radio broadcasting. I grew up listening to radio never watching TV. WOLFMAN JACK was my hero. KASEY KASEM, RICK DEES,and RICK CHASE were my mentors. I just want to do the best radio possible."

Nice of KB to mention the late Mr. Chase, who impacted a lot of people around Northern California during his tenure.

Nice of First Broadcasting to let him loose. Now, with only Staci Anderson and Susan Wright remaining as full-time airstaff (Steve Woods resigned on Monday), what happens when AM and PM drive walk out the door?

Maybe they'll just throw Mexican mariachi music on it now so that it'll be ready for the next owner that'll likely own it soon. (kidding... sorta)

First-at-sucking Broadcasting Co..

I feel for the people involved there. Flash could have been a good station.

I'm glad to see KB was able to get out of that bad deal ok although I'll miss hearing him on Flash. He's one of the best IMHO. Good luck KB.

Now stop that, they still have Brook Davis. Oh wait, she works for Clear Channel. Damn, I guess you're right.

I haven't been within the walls of First Broadcasting for awhile, but as of 3 months ago it was a ghost town. Much respect to Susan and Staci for hanging in there... I'm sure they're looking.<P ID="signature">______________

I'm not at all trying to say "I told you so", but I've been saying on this board for a year and change that First Broadcasting never intended on being a long-term operator.

It's not what they do. They buy, upgrade, and their sole intent on doing so (and programming the place) is to increase the sale value down the road. I did wonder if they'd hang in longer than this, tho, and I feel very bad for the employees who got caught in this.

Best case scenario for the First employees who are either out or will be looking... perhaps it gave them a pretty good audition for a better, future gig in Sacramento or elsewhere.

You're right -- but please define "long-term operator" in the modern world of broadcasting. Understandably, the CC's, CBS's, Entercoms of the world...okay, I get that. But in the era of consolidation, what constitutes long-term for smaller, investor-based operators?

First Broadcasting - Short Term Owner

First Broadcasting is unique even among them.

First's primary goal is to buy and flip away stations. Period. When they announced they were actually going to program the Sacramento move-ins at 92.1 and 103.9, it was a surprise to virtually everyone in the business...as their previous MO had been to hang onto their move-in stations only long enough to sell them to another operator.

I speculated then that they were programming and promoting these stations only to increase their eventual sale value, and I turned out to be more right than I realized at the time.

As for small companies in general...the difference is that their "long-term" is usually determined by the financial situation of their operation. They don't hang in there for more than a year or two, at times, because A) their stations are losing money hand over proverbial fist or B) a large, multi-station operator like CC, CBS or Entercom comes in and waves a fistful of cash at them.

In that environment, it's very tough for the small station group or owner to sit tight and grow the business.

The difference with First is that they never *intended* on growing the business any farther than increasing the value over a year or two, then selling. In fact, they make a LOT of money doing just that. It was not going to be any different in Sacramento, despite the dog-and-pony show they put on at launch.

It's a very sad lesson the local First employees had to learn. Radio being sort of a "short-term" business anyway (in terms of formats, presentation, etc.), perhaps many of them were ready for it...if you're not at KFBK or KNCI or another long-established station that will still be in the format 20 years from now, you have to be thinking in the back of your head about how long the ride will last, sale or no.

As Producer of the KB show I would like to take a moment to say thanks for the kind words people have typed on this issue. I feel very bad for the people remaining at Flash. Good profesionals and even better people. Am and PM walk out the door that is a shame. And although it may not sound like it, KB is actually a very good guy. Commited to radio and respectful of it's power. And Steve Woods is one of the best guys ever! Both men are good people and solid radio jocks so when 2 good men walk, there is obviously a problem that is deeper than what we see on the surface.

KB just wants to do great radio and although he was given a freedom unlike any other, it was negated by a signal packin a whoping 2900 watts (If That). Anyway, on to the next adventure. Much love to Steve, Susan, Stacey, and all the programming and promotion staff left at Flash. I'm glad First did the right thing after 5 months of agony by letting him be released.

When I only have terrestrial radio available , I have KCCL and Flash on most of the time. I thought Flash has done a suprising job covering the 80's or more. They were pretty much a commercialized 80's on 8. They did a much better job then Star 101 on the bay, and this announcer Keith Brooks was pretty well cut out for their format.
But both stations have not done well in the last book, which I have no answer to....and who knows by reading the above post, I wouldn't dare give up my satellite.
They turn over these stations as fast the real estate market.

Flash did poorly on the last book because NOBODY can hear it...It's simple, between the constant format changes on 92.1 and the weak signal it would be nearly impossible to get any kind of respectable book...EVER! KB was #1 in the demo when he was on another station...KB loves music so I think he would do great on any format, and in fact has proven so. His personality and delivery is simply tops in this city. I mean let's just be real honest here...Can you think of another afternoon personality in this city that is as entertaining as Keith Brooks? Not even close. Last month I heard him give away a bottle of Shasta grape Drink because it had been sitting in the studio for a solid week and nobody claimed it. So he gave it away as a prize! I heard him call a mental health facility in nor-cal and convince them he was an escaped patient who couldn't find his way home. I have actually heard other jocks immulate Keith. Steal HIS bits and use the same news and punchlines as Keith did weeks prior. This company (First) is a disgrace to broadcasting. In a world of commercialized radio, huge corporations destroying "Real Radio" isn't it amazing that we are turning to them for safety from hack comapnies like First?

I know what your talking about, and I have listened to other funnier stunts in in the past in other markets. But these big wig corps don't seem to care as much as oppose to many of these postees who get emotional about it. And it's probably going further in this direction before it gets better. It's not the same radio people who run it anymore. It doesn't bother me at all, because I have so many sources if I want to listen to 80's music.... including my own CD collection that has every greatest hit and best of compilation out there.

Re: The reason to hold on to your XM.

"First Broadcasting" seems to be a misnomer.. They are an investment company, nothing more. They buy a station they think they can upgrade, do so, and then sell it, usually at a huge profit. They aren't real radio folks at all. If they own it, it has a for sale sign in the window. Anyone who thinks they will be around awhile, or works for them thinking they have a good career with them is only fooling themselves. From a money standpoint, they are brilliant. (except for 92.1 so far) From a broadcaster standpoint, they got nuthin'.

I think you have to be cautious when throwing the word "brilliant" around when speaking of First "Broadcasting". They're losing hundreds of thousands each month with "Flash 92.1". And all indications are that their other properties are failing as well. I'm not a professor of business but I do seem to remember the reasons for business was to make money. I'm sure I read that somewhere.

I know that the people who worked for and continue to work for First understand now and did then the reputation of these "business" people. I think that 2 years of the inmates running the institution and doing radio like it was always meant to be is probably well worth the inconvinience of a corporation full of tards and morons pushing the paper back in Texas. The bigger problem is how these paper pushers have treated their staff and the families of the people who worked so hard for them. I true story of to much money and to much time to get into trouble with it. Ron Unkefer...In the words of Bud Fox, "When is enough enough? How many boats can you ski behind?" What a joke!

Re: The reason to hold on to your XM.

<snipped>

I meant brilliant with their upgrade & sell succeses, which is what they strive for.. Remember that 94.3 in jackson sold for around $20 mil, and so did 103.9 after they upgraded it. I'll bet they didn't have 5mil in for both. Not a bad profit, eh? I still think they are dreaming that they'll ever get the 18 to 20 mil they want for 92.1, tho. I really don't see any upgrade for that signal that wouldn't still suck in sacramento...

Whats a few mil loss, in the long run, if they get serious bucks for it later?
No, not defending them, I really don't like what they do. On the other hand, I'm jealous that I didn't think of it first...

I might ask the same question of people who complain about First Broadcasting. It was never a secret that this is a shyster operation. It was no secret that the signals were poor. It was no secret that they weren't about to pay real money to hire full staffs and deliver a real product. Why is everyone so surprised that this person quit, or that person is no longer there.

To me, this is like the people who complain about Wal-Mart and then continue to shop there. I wouldn't care if I loved the 80s or country, these were two stations (and eventually one station) that I would never listen to, fully aware that any time invested in them would ultimately be a waste. And no offense to the people who went to work for them but if they did, they should have known what they were getting into. I don't like seeing lives turned upside down any more than any of you, but I'm not sure First Broadcasting is any more to blame for that than the people who chose to work there. I don't wish any of their employees (current or former) ill will but there was a reality that apparently both employees and listeners chose to ignore --now you wanna complain about it? What did you expect?

Yeah well...What they do isn't all that unheard of and they aren't exactly pioneers...They aren't the first to do what they do either, I think the first to do the same thing was umm...HITLER oh yeah that's right :)

Re: The reason to hold on to your XM.

Your argument is a good one. I so know that in the case of KB he was sold a completely different idea than what actually was going tohappen. The place was filled with really good radio people, very few of which heard anything about what First Broadcasting was known for. First broadcasting came into the building soon after launch and sat everyone down and told them they were in it for the long haul. Even going as far as to come into the station to give a "we're here for many years to come" rah rah speach 24 hours before the sale of the station of which they were refering was sold!

I agree that if you go to work for wal-mart then complain about the low wages then you probably should have known the deal when you filled out the application. In this case however, good people asked the questions before signing on with the comapny and were lied to. It was sad to watch it all fall apart. And in the end, it's First Broadcasting and it's band of carpet baggers that are to blame. Hey Ron Unkefer...If you want a hobby, try stamp collecting. It's screws with less peoples lives!

I don't buy this argument. If the company lied about terms of employment, they are subject to liable (and this is one company that would deserve a spanking in court, I agree). That rah rah speech is the same one management always uses. Put it in writing. Or walk.

Will others be willing to take the job? Of course, but talented people need to stand behind their talent and basically tell management to back up their promises in a legal manner. I've been there, I've done it, I've won, mostly because I learned early (thanks to a solid contract in a previous employment situation) that no one will protect you in this business. If you can afford to have your life tumbled around like a 25-cent spin in the laundromat drier, take the job, but sorry, you're not allowed to complain if you failed to take precautions. Bottom line: employers don't care about you; you have to make them, and there's only one way to do it. I'd rather approach potential employment with that mindset even though it might be an unfair presumption in some cases. My time, my talent, my life, is too valuable to let a Mickey Mouse operator take me for a ride. It's just not worth the price of creatively giving away a can of soda on the air.

With all due respect, of course.

Indeed.

Look, I find it hard to buy the argument that the folks working there didn't know what First Broadcasting was about. ON THIS VERY BOARD, myself and others talked with at least two people in that building, and told them the nature of their company's operations.

And as I remember, we got a lot of argument about it.

I understand wanting to believe the best about a company which gives you an on-air (or other) shot. Believe me, I do. I understand denial. But First Broadcasting's record was well-known, and there was NO indication that Sacramento would end up being any different. Anyone who honestly thought that these frequencies would still be owned and run by that company even 5 years down the road was dreaming.

That doesn't make it any easier for some of the very talented folks who passed through the Commerce Circle halls. But the only reason I made a stink of it back then was to give them a little information they could use...to make their experience less shocking at the end.
