Keith Olberman Hands Bill O'Reilly His Head

E

Guest
Great theatre on Tuesday night as Keith Olberman went after the proposterously pompous Bill O'Reilly after O'Reilly went after every other broadcast outlet other than his own Fox.
Wish I had a transcript.
Olberman had a great line about maybe having to call O'Reilly's boss " no not Rupert Murdoch but Satan and you know how Satan hates to be disturbed in the middle of. . ." and Olberman mentioned some Fox reality show.
Even Chris Matthews acknowledged Olberman tour de force noting that Bill O'Reilly can dish it out but he can't take it.
Kudos [ actually correctly kudi] to Keith Olberman.

You can catch both sides of the increasingly nasty spat on www.crooksandliars.com. Just scroll down for O'Reilly and Olberman's respective clips.

O'Reilly's threat to "expose NBC" if Olberman's boss doesn't muzzle Olbermann was the most pompous thing ever on television.

Olbermann used Ted Baxter's voice to quote O'Reilly back to him and (accurately) pointed out the amazing land of Oz Bill must be living on to suggest Fox has treated its competitors with respect (I especially enjoyed the reminders than Fox News slapped up insulting billboards outside of CNN Center and called Paula Zahn a dead muskrat). Olbermann also brought back up the sex harrassment settlement O'Reilly had to pay. O'Reilly won't name Keith specifically because they are on during the same time slot and I suspect he doesn't want to give Keith a ratings boost.

Olbermann also called O'Reilly's boss Satan, suggesting Rupert would be mad if someone interrupted him during American Idol.

It's actually quite amusing. I'm waiting to see what O'Reilly supposedly has on NBC. No... it's actually quite hysterical, especially when Bill led off his show screwing up the name of the ABC anchor Bob Woodruff feigning deep concern on the same day he was complaining that the news media's attention about the dangerous situation in Iraq was giving Americans the impression the war wasn't going well, but that's a topic you can read about in Off the Air.

O'Reilly sounds like a modern day Joe McCarthy.... "Mister Chairman...Mister Chairman....point of order ... point of order... I have a document here that proves John Doe is a Communist..."

Fortunately, Edward R. Murrow handed Tail Gunner 90 Proof McCarthy his head in the mid 50's. Glad to see the Keith Olbermann is attempting the same with biting humor and satire.

"Good night, and Good luck." E.R. Murrow

The transcript isn't on the MSNBC website yet (probably tomorrow), but there is a video clip of that segment on the Countdown page there:

*LOL!* *ROTFLMAO!* (Peeling myself away from the floor now) :)

And to think ALL of this coming from a man who started his network TV career - ON ESPN!!

Hey...Who says the SportsCenter people can't hack it in the news business?

Priceless. ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS. :)

Cheers :)

Wow, O'Reilly's one fan!

Actually Keith Olbermann was a sportscaster here in Boston on WVCB the ABC affiliate.

Not exactly... Olbermann (like Dan Patrick) started his network TV career at CNN Sports. His career path is lengthy, but as best I can find: UPI, RKO Radio, CNN, WCVB, KTLA, KCBS, ESPN, MSNBC/NBC, Fox, CNN again, MSNBC again (now concurrently with ESPN Radio). (I'm sure I missed something here. His skills have not in the past included happiness with management.)

I agree with everything else you said or quoted.

..you did -- KFWB Radio in Los Angeles used him as their New York-based reporter in the immediate wake of 9/11...
______________

BTW what is Doberman's ratings recently? PMSNBC's? Are they lower than the Food Network?

I'll make that one better, BOTH Keith Olbermann AND Bill O'Reilly worked at WCVB-TV. I don't think their tours of duty co-incided with each other. I recall O'Reilly was a co-anchor at 'CVB in the late 1980's before he "went Hollywood" with "Hard Copy". He's not what I call a very credible source for "news".
______________

PS. Your comments are at the very least sexist as well as offensive regarding "PMS"NBC. Besides, should at give attribution to Limbaugh. Have you ever heard of plagiarism?

While O'Reilly is an overwhelmingly huge and well-deserving target, Olberman is a total lightweight, who is utterly incapable of handing anyone his or her head. Olberman should go back to ESPN where he belongs (and does much better when paired with Dan Patrick on radio).

Not that O'Reilly is any prize either. He deserves to be taken down a few notches, but it should be done by someone with real credibility in the news business - not a sportscaster who is clearly out of his league.

My take on it is: Pompous egotistical blowhard, meet pretentious full-of-himself a$$clown. You figure out which is which. :-D

Need I remind you that Bill O'Reilly made his name as a gossip reporter for "A Current Affair". Now, those are real credentials for hard news.

While you're entitled to your opinion, I have to say that it seems that you don't watch enough Countdown...Olbermann is a 'lightweight' only in comparing audiences amongst the two. His questioning is honest and it doesn't de-evolve into bullying, unlike Phone-Sex Billy.

Perhaps Olbermann's best quality is that he doesn't take himself that seriously...nobody listening to O'Reilly for any amount of time could honestly give him the same compliment. After all, it isn't Keith making childish, vague threats to 'expose' Fox News or suggest it's president/chairman take action against another TV host...
______________

Somehow, I'm not surprised at Limbaugh relying on 8th grade insults...
______________

To be fair, you're right - I don't watch Olberman much but I've never been impressed with his current show when I have watched it. I do prefer him on ESPN Radio with Dan Patrick, and didn't mind him on Sportscenter years ago either. At least he can discuss sports with a real degree of intelligence.

Olberman doesn't take himself seriously but he should take what he's talking about more seriously. MSNBC isn't Comedy Central. I wouldn't want to see John Stewart on a legitimate news station either.

But O'Reilly takes himself way too seriously, as do several other Fox News Channel folks (Gibson, Hannity, Greta). That's not good either.

That's an insult to 8th graders--most can come up with more clever insults than Limbaugh, Savage, etc.
